Bottle shared by Maekchu. The craziest, hugest, blackest head I have ever seen on a beer. Simple mind-boggling! Nose of coffee, chocolate, wood, minerals. Nice but not all that special. Burnt, thick, sweet flavor of roasty wood ash. Sweet and nice but not so complex. HUGE body—thick as hell. The heaviest beer I have ever tried to drink! This is a fun, crazy beer. Basically decent, but the appearance and body are extremely unique.

Pours jet black, dark mocha head. Great sticky lacing all the way down.
Roasty Choclate aroma, a little coffee, dark fruit.
Lots of dark fruit in the taste, sweet dark malt, coffee and bitter Choclate.
Big chewy mouthfeel, huge body, low carbonation, flavors really stick to the palate.
Yum, one of my favorites!

At Avery’s 2012 Strong Ale Fest. Black with a dark brown head. Enticing aroma of grilled smokey chocolate, dark roast coffee, a touch of wood. Flavor is a complex explosion. Chocolate throughout with a deep roasty maltiness and a nice coffee undertone. Very big but sweet chocolaty complex. And velvety smooth. Good grief!

Pours a dark black with a brown head and aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is sweet, of dark chcolate, roasted malt, and coffee, with a heavy mouthful and syrupy texture along with a long finish. Amazing stout, great brew by CCB.

Wow ! Pours a deep dark opaque color, with a malty chocolate aroma. The stout is heavy, almost like a like a light syrup. Taste is spectacular, sips are all malt and dark roasty chocolate. Perhaps and arguably one of the best imperial stouts available. Finish is flavorful and heavy, Quaff Score 9 / 10

Pours thick and sludgy with a thin tan head. The aroma is roasty and chocolatey with some coffee notes. The best part of this beer is the mouthfeel. The flavors are sweet with dark chocolate and slightly bitter notes on the finish. The beer feels like a milkshake on your palate, but finishes clean. Lovely stout.

From notes. First reviewed 1/31/2011. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a pint glass. This is a flat 2010 bottle.
This looks like motor oil coming out of the bottle, SO viscous. Almost no head unless it is a very high and aggressive pour. Then a tiny head forms, fades to a ring, and disappears. No lacing. At this point I am wondering if this is a ’flat’ bottle or if it is just this lightly carbonated.
The aromas blend together in a very smooth fashion. Roasted malt, chocolate malt, dark chocolate, coffee, a little molasses, and some anise. A touch of booze to remind me that it is a big bad army officer of a stout.
The taste is again, very smooth. The malt is blended, it tastes like several types of dark and roasted malts were used here. Dark chocolate, creamy coffee, vanilla, and some anise provide supporting flavors. Each flavor knows its role and has a properly proportioned strength. As the glass continues, the coffee flavors grow somewhat. Some spicy hops help to finish it out. There is some lingering coffee bitterness and molasses sweetness, but considering how huge this drinks, it cleans up fairly well. I think additional carbonation would help the finish even more as well.
This was not completely flat, but I think it was unintentionally under-carbonated. Other than that, it was velvety smooth, very viscous, creamy, and very full bodied. With a proper amount of carbonation, this score jumps considerably.
If this had the proper level of carbonation, it would be up there with the heavy hitters of the stout world. As is, it was ok, and all of us sort of lamented what could have been.
