This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Gregory Zhukov. Arguably one of World War IIís finest generals and a man bold enough to appreciate the rich, complex flavors of a beer brewed to fortify a body through the Russian winter. Like military geniuses, Russian Imperial Stouts reach their peak with a little age on them, so we release Marshal Zhukovís Russian Imperial Stout in sweltering August so that it will be at peak flavor come January or February. <P> Opaque black in color, the aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, dark sweet toffee with hints of black strap molasses. The flavor starts with an unsweetened chocolate character and supporting notes of herbal dryness from English hop varietals. It then moves into dark toffee sweetness and closes with a slap of roasty espresso. Zhukovís Imperial Stout pairs well with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia. Enjoy, comrade.

My favorite "Russian" Imperial Stout. Iíve always thought of the Russians as more pure and unadulterated than "American" Imperial Stouts, which I think of as stuff like FBS and BA stouts. Anyways, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasty chocolate and caramel. Taste is roasty with lots of sweet chocolate. Alcohol is there but hidden very nicely. Thick mouthfeel, but not too much. Love this beer.

The base for Hunaphu, is itself a fantastic beer. Dark thick pour, notes of chocolate and slight expresso. Really smooth and drinkable at this abv. The 2014 version is excellent although the bottles went from bombers to 22s. Interested to let this one sit for a few months.

I have put off starting or RateBeer for too long. I think this is a good place to start. 2014 bottle: Aroma: The English hop varietals are obvious in the nose and you can smell the heft of the malt bill. Alcohol & Molasses show through, but the aroma is surprisingly reserved. Appearance: Pours ink black, with the thinnest line of coffee-colored foam clinging to the glass. Taste: Young and flagrant, but thatís expected in a 2014. Initial taste is molasses and coffee. Mild chocolatey bitterness lingers from the roasted barley and hops. Salty brew. Palate: Marshal Zhukov manages to be gruff, yet silky smooth, coating the tounge and then leaving a warmth from the high ABV. Overall: Impressive beer that makes me think of Black Note w/ balls. Very excited to open my bottle from last year.

Bottle. 2014, drank fresh. Poured into a snifter. Nose is a dark chocolate and bittersweet cocoa. Pour is pitch black with a dark brown head. Taste is all dark chocolate and coffee without being astringent or burnt. Thick chewy mouthfeel. A slight to moderate alcohol warming. Feels like a slight burn, a little hot on the exhale. Slight soy sauce and teriyaki as it warms. A little tobacco. Seems like this is a bit hotter with booze than I remember. Still very good.

One of the new bombers. Color was black, nice and thick. Aroma was strong of chocolate, coffee, and toffee. Some caramel came out as well in the taste. Looking forward to seeing how it ages.

Enjoyed a snifter glass of the beer at the brewpub in Tampa. The beer had a black color with a thicker, oily appearance, and a good-sized creamy dark tan head with good retention, and excellent lacing and cling. Its aroma had stronger notes of chocolate, coffee, and toffee, along with lighter notes of caramel, molasses, and licorice. The taste was a sweet-bitter blend with strongest flavors of roasty chocolate and coffee, along with lighter toffee, caramel, and molasses notes. It was a very dry, thinner, and highly alcoholic beer with a lighter mouthfeel and body and average carbonation. A good beer, but definitely better suited for the winter.

Very hot which makes sense. Bourbon, toffee, dark dark chocolate, some woodiness, a little creamy. Nice, but not sure it's worth the fuss. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Slightly thick and syrupy. Chocolate, toffee and molasses. A bit of a metallic aftertaste. Got it on draft at cigar city tasting room!
