This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Gregory Zhukov. Arguably one of World War IIís finest generals and a man bold enough to appreciate the rich, complex flavors of a beer brewed to fortify a body through the Russian winter. Like military geniuses, Russian Imperial Stouts reach their peak with a little age on them, so we release Marshal Zhukovís Russian Imperial Stout in sweltering August so that it will be at peak flavor come January or February. <P> Opaque black in color, the aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, dark sweet toffee with hints of black strap molasses. The flavor starts with an unsweetened chocolate character and supporting notes of herbal dryness from English hop varietals. It then moves into dark toffee sweetness and closes with a slap of roasty espresso. Zhukovís Imperial Stout pairs well with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia. Enjoy, comrade.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Vovaís place. Thanks Dima. Pitch black with a bit of brown foam. Wonderful burnt aroma, full of dark chocolate, liqueur and some espresso. Bittersweet roasty flavor with lots of dark chocolate, cocoa, a bit of coffee and a more bitter, burnt finish. Full thick rounded mouthfeel. A wonderful Imperial Stout.

Vintage 2011 Wow, I donít understand how anybody can finish a bottle of this on their own. The beer pours obviously thicker than most worts, and creates a lovely dark, dark brown head that takes on a ruddy and maroon hue. The beer is black as night, and coats the glass almost as much as a Triple Bock. Nose is dark, roasty, oaty, molasses, brown sugar, prunes and some more molasses. The flavor delivers in the same lane of experience, toss in some hints of burnt coffee and raisin. The most overwhelming aspect of this beer is the mouthfeel. Iíve yet to experience anything thicker than this beer. It feels twice as dense as it looks, and rips the moisture from my mouth. It is brutally assertive in itís osmotic draw from my oral cavity. I canít decide if this is a good beer, or simply a beer worth trying. It is certainly a beer with complexity and intrigue, but is it worth seeking? I dunno, I canít see myself wanting another bottle of this. There were two of us (thanks to pixieskid for sharing this one) and I had most of the bottle, and the last sips seemed like a chore. IMO, that should never be the case. I can say, however, that the beer tasted good, and looked lovely. The mouthfeel is sooo polarizing for me that I wonder if I would appreciate it again. UPDATED: JAN 28, 2014 Bottle: one of the blackest stouts in the world. The inkiest, oiliest black youíll ever see with a burnt tan head thatís darker than most brown ales. What a beastly looking stout - perfection. Aroma filled with lovely notes of heavy roasted malt, espresso beans, cocoa, bittersweet dark fudge, burnt brown sugar, faint char, & mild back-end signs of hoppage. Taste is complete with thick, sweet fudge, dark chocolate, roasted malts, & huge roasted coffee bean essence. Nice sweet & milky underlayer balances the heavy roasted aspect of the beer perfectly. Noticeable herbal & ashy hops with a big finish of brown sugar, molasses, fudge, coffee, char, faint smoke, & slight nuttiness... What a badass stout!

Bottle, 12/06/2013. Pours pitch black, thick dark mocha cream frothy head fades to a smooth crema on the surface, thin ring of lacing. Aroma is sweet chocolate, dark fruit and raisins, cherry twizzler, touch of molasses, drying out a bit near the end with espresso, nutty roast. Taste is sweet, liqueur-like chocolate with red fruit, mild roast and coffee, light bitterness. Thick body. Nice.

Wonderful, smooth imperial. Black pour with large off white head. Chocolate, raisins, hops, caramel in the nose. Taste is creamy and has a crispness from hops to go with the chocolate, dark fruits, anise, and malts. Medium mouthfeel with low carbonation for a decadent smooth sweet beer.
