This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Gregory Zhukov. Arguably one of World War IIís finest generals and a man bold enough to appreciate the rich, complex flavors of a beer brewed to fortify a body through the Russian winter. Like military geniuses, Russian Imperial Stouts reach their peak with a little age on them, so we release Marshal Zhukovís Russian Imperial Stout in sweltering August so that it will be at peak flavor come January or February. <P> Opaque black in color, the aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, dark sweet toffee with hints of black strap molasses. The flavor starts with an unsweetened chocolate character and supporting notes of herbal dryness from English hop varietals. It then moves into dark toffee sweetness and closes with a slap of roasty espresso. Zhukovís Imperial Stout pairs well with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia. Enjoy, comrade.

Tap @ Rattle ní Hum. Poured black with brown legs. Nice! The aroma was sweet and roasty with notes of coffee and smoke. Roasted malt flavor that starts sweet but dries right out. Mild cocoa. Light side of a medium body. Dry and warming.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2010 (Bottle) Pours super black with a dark brown head. One of the blackest beers I have ever laid my eyes on. The aroma is heavily roasted and medium to heavily hoppy with tones of coffee, gunpowder, cocoa, dry molasses, tar, burned rubber, herbs and pine. Quite salty with light fruity undertones. Some vanilla and floral honey. The flavour is light sweet, medium to heavily bitter and light acidic. Super roasted with notes of coffee, cocoa, tar, asphalt and gunpowder. The mouthfeel is fat, round and light oily. Light to medium bodied. Roasted and piny finish. Near full bodied. Wow, a cool beer, still more aggressive than complex.

Bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Pours jet black with a foamy tan head. Not a lot of smell--toffee, charcoal, and a bit of charcoal, smoke, and a mellow hop grassiness. Taste is smooth roastiness and finishes with some caramel/toffee sweetness and a smoky/charcoal finish. The hops balance it out a bit, and itís smooth as hell. Had this right after Hunahpu, and liked this better.

Bottle with Craig, who kindly supplied this beer (cheers mate) consumed at my gaff, day three tasting 10-04-10 Pours íblack as yer atí with a beige head, streaks of oily liquid run down the side of this glass. Dark bitter sugars on the nose, with a little hoppiness also showing. Soft in the mouth and whilst it tastes great I agree with Craig, it could have a better mouthfeel. Coffee and bitter roasty notes takeover, dark molasses also in the mouth, and some bitter chocolate. Very nice. A7 A5 F8 P4 Ov15 3.9

My Bottom Line:
This seriously chocolatey Imperial Stout offers wealth and nourishment throughout, culminating into a wonderful blend of green hops, roasted malts and blackberry esters.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam crowns the impenetrable blackness.
-The mouthfeel is luscious and never too heavy.
-The multifaceted bitterness is long and never abrasive.
-The residual sugars develop molasses, caramel and dark chocolate.

(750ml bottle, 2009 vintage, courtesy of ericandersnavy). Poured black w/ a mocha creamy head w/ a cherry tint. Aroma was of dark roast, spice, and cherry. Taste was of coffee, pecans, hint of chocolate with a bitter after taste. Good beer.

Bottle thanks to Garry. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, chocolate, slight coffee. The flavor is sweet with chocolate leading the way. It is a bit boozy and has a heavy mouthfeel. It is a fine Imperial Stout though - serious beer in a large bottle.
