COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Gregory Zhukov. Arguably one of World War IIís finest generals and a man bold enough to appreciate the rich, complex flavors of a beer brewed to fortify a body through the Russian winter. Like military geniuses, Russian Imperial Stouts reach their peak with a little age on them, so we release Marshal Zhukovís Russian Imperial Stout in sweltering August so that it will be at peak flavor come January or February. <P> Opaque black in color, the aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, dark sweet toffee with hints of black strap molasses. The flavor starts with an unsweetened chocolate character and supporting notes of herbal dryness from English hop varietals. It then moves into dark toffee sweetness and closes with a slap of roasty espresso. Zhukovís Imperial Stout pairs well with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia. Enjoy, comrade.

Sampled on 12/4/2009. Bottle courtesy of iowaherkeye. Got to sample this one and the cedar aged version back to back. This Imperial Stout pours a dark black color from a 750ml bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. A medium bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. The hops are earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Lots of nice chocolate flavors. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle. A black beer with a dense dark tan head which left sheets of lace on the glass. Intense roasted aroma with big notes of chocolate and coffee. Medium to full body with a smooth mouth feel and soft carbonation. Flavor is hard roasted chocolate malt, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee with slight alcohol note. This brew is very smooth and balanced, good example of a CCB stout. Finishes slightly bitter and roasted.

750 ml thanks to drewbeerme. Dark oily black with a beige creamy head. Strong roast rich caramels, toffee, chocolate, and some ashy smoke. Red fruit is hidden underneath but the roasted malts dominates. Roasted malts and tobacco dominate the flavors. Some red fruit, caramel, and a slightly ashy finish. Becomes a little sweet, syruppy, and boozy when it warms up. Slick oily body. Despite this slight distraction, this is overall a really solid impy stout. well done.

This is basically identical to the Humidor Series version, except that this is slightly sweeter and of course thereís no cedar here.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a a two finger frothy dark mocha/coffee colored head with good retention, slowly fading into a lasting cap. Splotches of spotty lacing are left behind. Roasted chocolate malt aroma with hints of espresso/coffee bean, sweet milk and dark chocolate, licorice, molasses, honey as well as some subtle earthy hops. Not overly roasty with a good balance of sweet chocolate. The aroma is amazing and very complex. Chewy viscous mouthfeel with a very prominent roasty character and tons of sweet silky chocolate maltiness. Lots of deep roasted cofee/espresso bean flavor up front and dry earthy hops with some pine character. This is countered by a silky dark and milky chocolate presence mid palate and a lot of rosted malt, molasses and burnt toast flavor. More roasty espresso and coffe bean presence in the finish. I thought that this beer would be a bit sweeter but it is very dry, bitter and roasty and the hop profile is much more dominant than I would have liked. This beer is a bit rough when fresh but I feel the flavor will improve greatly with age. ABV is very well masked. Itís hard to believe itís 11%.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2010 A touch too syrupy, but the beer is very good overall. Actually, the description of the beer given on the bottle is pretty damn accurate. Lots of chocolate and espresso in the nose. The hops were a lot more noticeable than I expected, but that was a good thing and gave the beer an interesting dynamic. Definitely an interesting take on the style.

Bottle@Tastingsession. Apperance: Dark as coal with a creamy brown head. Aroma: Caramel, Chocolate, Roasted malts, Butterscotch. Flavor: Caramel, Roasted malts, Milk chocolate, Cocoa, Ripe fruit. Palate: Low carbonation and very high residual sweetness in this one. Smooth and robust. A good imperial stout that reminds me of 3F Dark Lord because of the big sweetness. Very good stuff.
