This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Gregory Zhukov. Arguably one of World War II’s finest generals and a man bold enough to appreciate the rich, complex flavors of a beer brewed to fortify a body through the Russian winter. Like military geniuses, Russian Imperial Stouts reach their peak with a little age on them, so we release Marshal Zhukov’s Russian Imperial Stout in sweltering August so that it will be at peak flavor come January or February. <P> Opaque black in color, the aroma has notes of espresso, chocolate, dark sweet toffee with hints of black strap molasses. The flavor starts with an unsweetened chocolate character and supporting notes of herbal dryness from English hop varietals. It then moves into dark toffee sweetness and closes with a slap of roasty espresso. Zhukov’s Imperial Stout pairs well with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia. Enjoy, comrade.

750ml bottled August 31, 2012. Served at cellar temperature. HUGE thanks to Mark for this treat!

Pours incredibly thick and black with without a doubt the darkest head I’ve ever seen on a stout. Leaves some lacing and recedes to a wispy cap and ring.

Aroma is really rich deep dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, espresso and gourmet coffee, dark fruits, rum-soaked raisins, figs, dates, anise, molasses, hint of smoke. Good to very good strength.

Flavor is espresso, serious coffee, dark chocolate, raisins, figs, burnt roasted malts, smoke, anise, molasses, caramel, toffee, fairly sweet, alcohol is there but fits in perfectly for a beer of this size. Unbelievably rich and complex.

Mouthfeel is full-on full-bodied, thick, chewy, sticky, eat it with a fork. Perfect.

Freakin’ fantastic. This is right up my alley. The thicker the better when it comes to Imperial Stouts...I find Ten FIDY to be a little to thin for my tastes...this one delivers. So rich. So complex. Tons of espresso and chocolate as well as boatloads of overripe dark fruits. My only bottle...I will cherish and savor this one and hope to land more in the future.

Rustbrown head, fast gone over jet-black beer. Black ànd sweet chocolate, some unidentifiable, but really nice green herbs, and... tobacco? Jacket potato, earthy, chocolate, felt, alcohol & fusels. Seriously complex. Alcoholburn², utterly well-bodied and viscous. Talk about Imperial - impressive.

750 ml. bottle sampled @ "Er Klopt Iemand Op De Deur" Samson & Gert Bierproeving I. Thanks! Spare rocky dark head. Pitchblack. Rediculously thick beer, molasses, nutty, burnt, roasted, bitter, leather, faint earth, wood, charcoal, very bitter, very heavy roast, thick dark berries syrup. Crazily thick beer, very interesting, bit too much roast for me personally but wonderful all the same. Thick, creamy molasses.

750 ml bottle. Pours a true black with a dark tan head that creeps to the edge of the glass, moderate lacing. Aroma is complex, deep and rich: chocolate malt, roast, toffee sweetness. Flavor is large and in charge: chocolate notes come through the intense and balanced RIS flavors. Alcohol is well masked - this is 11.5%? Viscous as oil. Delicious. From notes 1/23/10 (Geist Dark Lord tasting).

Had a three year vertical with 2011, 2012, 2013 bottles with many many thanks to PaulUnwin! My favorite from the bunch was the 2011, followed by the 2012 and rounded out in last by the 2013. Make no mistake there wasn’t a bad beer in the bunch. These are all bold, fully-rounded, flavorful and intense Stouts. To do a vertical of these was truly a first-class treat.

Black of color with a nice brown head. An aroma of roasted malt, liqurice, bitter notes and coffee. A flavor of sweets, roasted malt, minerals, raisins, coffee and a nice oily texture.

Huge, bold flavoured beer....lots of chocolate and malts, very dark pour with a bronze head. Super full body, yet creaming and slightly boozy, but the amazing flavour makes it for a superb drink, one of the better beers I’ve had - Thanks heaps Bytemesis

’14 B-day tasting party-beer of the night for me. ’11 bottle I think I got from fullobs a few years back? Pours like motor oil. Deep black. Light soy, molasses, dark roast and burnt malts. Stewed prunes, ash, molasses, dark bitter chocolate. Maybe the longest finish of any beer I’ve ever had. Originally had this at Boulder Strong Ale ’12 and remembered using 3 or 4 tickets on it to have with my bbq b/c I liked it so much. Glad this lived up to the memory.
