Entering old rates. Draft @ CCB.

1 liter swing-top growler sent via trade with Maltzilla- thanks again, Diego! Pours a deep, cloudy chestnut brown color with some reddish tints and a tiny beige head. Looks a lot like the normal Big Sound. Aroma of oak, vanilla, caramel malts, brandy, dark fruits (plums, dark cherries), brown sugar, and a little smoke. The flavor is largely the same, big on oak and vanilla in particular. The brandy/alcohol comes through for sure but in a really nice, mellow, warming way. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and an oaky mouthfeel. Just an awesome beer, and I’m thrilled I got to try this.

Tap @ CCB. Murky dark brown body with a thin tan head. Nose is boozy and vinous with big notes of wood, cherry, raisin, and molasses. Body is mostly full with soft carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. Flavor is sweet and boozy, dark fruit notes abound as does a woody note, lighter notes of brandy and vanilla. Finished with a good amount of warming alcohol. I enjoyed this one more than Big Nuts.

Growler… Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, khaki head. Decent retention. The aroma is a malty, decadent swirl of caramel, mocha, vanilla, spicy wood and candied dark fruits. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and tickling carbonation. The flavor is sweet, malty and earthy – wood and mocha stand out. Mocha and caramel finish. Not as sweet as the base beer (2nd or 3rd batch of Big Sound Scotch Ale). Growler courtesy of dchmela!

On draft at CCB. Pours almost black with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of vanilla, ripe dark fruit, chocolate,, brandy, caramel. Flavor is sweet and malty with a nice, sweet brandy flavor with notes of chocolate, caramel, light ripe dark fruit. Medium to full body with a lightly boozy finish. Liked this one better than Sound of Big Nuts.

Draft at Cigar City. This one pours a hazy, dark mahogany brown colored body with almost no head or lacing at all. The is very rich and sweet showing a dark, toasted caramel and cocoa roast malt base to go with mounds of sweet vanilla beans and oak soaked in brandy. There is a touch of dark fruits and a hint of cherry that gives a nice earthy quality. The flavor follows and is big on the rich caramel and toasted toffee malts along with the sweet vanilla that plays a very prominent role. Some figs and raisins come through adding fruity depth and the apple brandy adds to the already sweet profile. Full bodied and smooth with minimal carbonation and slightly sticky on the palate from the residual sugars. This one has good depth of flavors, but is just a touch too sweet for me to enjoy in larger quantities. Still a really good brew.

The aroma of subtle sweet cherries with very little smokiness. The color of a dark scotch ale, super dark brown with a nice tan head on top. The flavor is smoother than the nuts, with sweet cherry notes and an acidic finish.

Draft at Cigar City for the Double Barrel Zhukov’s release. The pours yields a hazy, nearly opaque, dark mahogany brown body. There is virtually no head or lacing of note. Aromas are very sweet, based in rich, darkly toasted toffee and caramel, with a slight hint of cocoa roast and loads of sweet vanilla bean and brandy soaked oak. Some indiscernible dark fruits lend further sweetness, along with a hint of earthiness. Flavors too are heavy of rich caramel and toasted toffee, also suggesting figs and dates. Vanilla is very prominent and very sweet, too much so, in fact, for my liking. The apple brandy just amplifies the sweetness. On the palate, carbonation is minimal, creating a slick mouthfeel that just seems a little lifeless and overly sugary. This really isn’t my cup of tea. It’s a fine tasting brew, but I really wouldn’t want more than a couple of ounces as an occasional dessert.

8/20/10. Thanks to Ryan for bringing this growler up for me! Nice dark brown pour. The aroma is huge BA characteristics - oak, vanilla, coconut, and more - with sweet vanilla and a solid dose of sour cherry. The flavor is hugely udiabetically sweet. Huge sweet scotch ale with sweet vanilla, cherry, wood, coconut, and more, but damn this is rich. Hugely thick and sweet. Phew.
