A deep dark saison with a thin lacing brown head. In aroma, a nice peated malt with dark fruits and soy sauce. In mouth, a nice smooth peaty and lightly salty malt with smooth dark fruits, fusel alcohol, interesting. On tap at brewery, Dec. 9 2012.

Draft... Black pour with a small, creamy, off-white head. Great retention. The aromatic standouts are deep-roast grains, dark chocolate and banana. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and lazy carbonation. The flavor’s foundation is roasted malts, unsweetened chocolate and banana, with only a rumor of spicy farmhouse phenols and acidity. Finishes singed and faintly tart.

Enjoyed at the CC Tasting Room. Drinkable on a warm day, but undercarbonated and a little sourness that detracted from the spice. Not a normal saison.

My Bottom Line:
Burnt malt flavors are salvaged by citrusy thyme allusions, chicory-like roastiness and a lush mouthfeel for quite the quizzical Dark Saison.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam surfs the blackness.
-The body is not as dry as I like my Saisons, but then again the finish is not that sweet.
-The creamy body is easily the beer’s best feature. But those burnt notes detract from the enjoyment after every sip.
-The roasted malt bitterness is met by more citrusy spiciness.
On tap at Funky Buddha.

Tap at Dahlia’s Pour House. Pours a low haze, deep cola. Big lacing. Medium foam. Nose is estery, gamey, mint, cocoa powder, peppermint gum. Taste is nutty, gamey, coffee, mint. Palate is dusty, coffee gritty, more odd mint flavors.

3/4/13. On tap at Dahlia’s. Deep brown pour with a nice khaki head. Light spice and ester aroma with plenty of chocolate and roast. Lightly estery and sweet flavor with a touch of spice and again plenty of chocolate and roast is popping through. Nice!

Tap at Cigar City. Black saison - I don’t get much saison, this is a little dry on the finish and slightly sour. Still tasty.

On draft at CCB. Pours a medium brown with a tan head. Nose is cocoa, earth, nutmeg, roasted nuts, and some yeast. Flavor follows the nose: a cocoa, earthy, nutty, and yeasty saison. Light to medium in body and an interesting beer that seems to meld more than two styles.

Draft @ World of Beer. Pours dark brown/black color with tan head. Aromas of lightly roasted malts, coffee with yeasty and earthy notes. Similar flavors with a slight tartness. Medium body with average carbonation. Decent.
