4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
"whoa nelly - this was a bit more intense than i thought it’d be. this english style barleywine/old ale manages a ridiculous level of complexity. toffee, caramel, citrus hops, rye spice, and a strong chocolate undercurrent, both in the nose and flavor. a wonderful sipper. if the sweetness in the flavor and the alcohol in the nose were toned down just a notch, this would be one of the very best."

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Serving: 750 ml. bottle. It pours a medium ruddy brown with a thin head. The nose is fresh baked spice bread and sweet caramel. Full bodied and warming. Toffee, spice bread, candied orange, and caramel on the tongue with a lingering spicy sweet finish. Tasty stuff.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle shared by Phatdog1, thanks Craig. 2013 vintage. Dirty brown color with very little head. Aroma all notes of dark fruit. Dates, raisins, plums and figs.
Flavors is a blast of sugar and dark fruits. Raisins, dates and figs soaked in caramel and molasses. Cloying sweet. I think I need to go to the hospital to check my insulin levels. Just a sugar bomb! Maybe it would help with cellaring for a longer amount of time, not sure. Hard to drink.

MMM a barleywine in May! woohooo. Dark mahogany caramel appearance. Smells like copper pennies and depression. Sort of like walking into a hot topic in your 30s and wondering where you went wrong?
Taste is pretty redeeming. still a lot of metallic, rice crispy treats and cookie crisps. a touch of port barrel. oily and thick.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2014 Rating from notes, drank 18 Dec 2011 -- poured out of the bottle into a pint glass. Probably the best Winter Warmer I have ever had. I need to make this an annual tradition.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
~25ml portion of a 2013/14 bottle served in a Belgian snifter.
Pours a murky dark brown, leaving hardly a trace of sediment in the bottle.
Aroma: sweet and roasted grains, alcohol esters, cooked peaches and other fruits.
Flavor: sweet, bordering on too sweet, with plenty of soft and dark fruits, some alcohol esters, dark bread, and hints of toffee, chocolate and brown sugar.
O: Distinct, complex and interesting. ABV partly hidden.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Brown pour with an off-white head. The nose on this one is amazing, notes of fig, molasses, brandy, and some citrus character. Flavor is big malt background with lots of dark fruits. Slightly warming finish from the abv but hey it’s called Winter Warmer that’s to be expected. Very good!

Pours a light brown. Off white head holds strong. Aroma of French toast, crackers and peach. Taste like a cherry tootsie pop with a carmel/molasses finish. Finishes slightly sweet.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011/2012 Bottle. Aromas of figs, dark fruit, sweet malt and picking up some faint olives. (Weird) The taste is all there. A quick zing up front and then a barrage of malts and sweet fruit. There is a depth in this aged version that the new does not have. Long and sweet I could sip on this all night. Definitely better with age.
