4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
12oz can. 5/23/16 can date. Appearance: Deep golden, touch of orange, cloudy, with a thick off white foam head that lingers with nice lacing.
Aroma: Strong tropical fruit notes of pineapple, mango, and some berry, intertwined with with a light toasted oak. Very nice.
Taste: Moderate caramel malt sweetness, blended with strong hop flavors of grapefruit and orange citrus, with a touch of light toasted oak and vanilla throughout that peaks in the swallow. Bitterness is moderately strong and seems somewhat muted from the original jai alai
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation.
Finish: Dry tannic finish with some tacky resin. Toasted oak comes thru retronasally.
Overall: Really nice take on an already great beer, by introducing the oak for added flavor and complexity that does not overpower. Well balanced between the great hop aroma and flavor against a light but complementary toasted oak. While the bitterness seems a little muted from the original, the overall complexity of this increased

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz can courtesy of Steve. Normal looking pour for the style. Aroma brings on the hoppiness of the original version, taste is where some of the wood notes come in and take some of the rough edges off. A bit smoother.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Cloudy orange gold, off white persistent head. Nice and sweet and then the jai alai hops come but subdued by the oak. You can taste the hint of vanilla there. Then the finish is drier. Great variation on a wonderful theme.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Fresh can from the brewery. Interesting take on the straight Jai Alai. A little more reserved/restrained but still some nice pine resin and grapefruit pith to it with some lingering bitterness. Not quite as heavy as the standard Jai Alai too. Tasty.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz can from Cigar City. Pours dark copper golden with thin white head. Notably darker than standard Jai Alai. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, oak comes on mid-palate - substantial dry and oaky notes, even more so than the original, which has oaky notes itself. Hops are floral and decidedly on the back. Taste is similar - the dry oak notes are strong but not overwhelming, though they do meld with and somewhat mute the heavy hops of the original. A fun drinker, definitely worth trying, but doesn’t measure up to the non-oak aged as an IPA.
