muzzlehatch (4424) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JUN 9, 2006
Sample from the bottle (330 ml) at the Mondial de la Bire in Montreal, 2006. It pours a pale gold with little head, plenty of visible yeast swirling gently in the glass....nose is hugely hoppy and spicy, rather surprising for me, full of wonderful, pungent complexities: punpernickel-rye, juniper, dogwood and touches of honey, just marvellous juicy and enticing....the body is sweet, spicy and redolent of tropical fruits (mango, papaya) sprinkled with brown sugar, floating in a boat of soft sourdough and dusted with pepper towards the finish....no trace of alcohol appears, the tongue is kissed by a marvellous balancing act, bitterness and tartness, soft but energetic carbonation, light but significant honey-caramel sweetness. A delight and one of my five or so favorites at the festival. This bottle seemed very, very fresh and Id guess thats the best way to serve this fine beast.

Hazy bronze color with a small beige head. Aroma of coriander and a little citrus. Flavor of coriander, spices, citrus and sugary sweetness.

The beer as it sets in my St. Bernardus glass is a scintillating golden amber color, the head miniscule and what is left after it evanesces leaves a patchy sheet of lace. The aroma of over ripe apples comes to mind along with a bit of malt, citrus fresh and clean. Start is sweet, malt laden, the top middling in its mouth feel with the finish biting in its acidity, the hops spicy in their presence. The aftertaste quite dry and long lasting with a trace of alcohol bitterness, quite a nice beer and a great change of pace from the normal French beers.

Very light golden color. Creamy thin head traversed the glass. Light, yeasty. What a summer brew. Fruity, candy like. I think I could knock back a few of these on a hot summer day. Cheers Per

UPDATED: OCT 12, 2004 Golden and very hazy with large white foamy head. Awesome fruity aroma of sweet pineapples, apricot, pears and lemon. Nice!!! Fruity and smooth flavour of orange, sweet citrus, pineapples with some yeast. Alcohol is very well-hidden. Long fruity finish. This one will kill you...maybe not.

Dark golden color be-speckled with white particles of yeast. Smaller lid of off white small bubbles. From the start of the first sniff I can tell this is going to be an strange journey. Ike and Mikes are jumping about in a pool of honey waving bouquets of goldenrod and petunias. Spiced apple and pear compote flavors. Mace, allspice, lemon, orange zest all swim easily in this pool. Light burn of acidic hops and alcohol converge near the end. A interesting and challenging potation. Thanks slikwily for forwarding this strangely wonderful brew.

Crosling (1863) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - OCT 3, 2004
Sampled at Le Sois Bock in Paris, France. Light Golden. The nose varied throughout but was very enjoyable providing periodic whiffs of different fruits (grapes, lemons and apples) but then switching to a more dry and herbal base with whiffs of hay and flowers. Solid in its flavor. Very solid. Sweet and very fruity with notes of coriander, tangerine and peach, also some sugars perhaps. A toasty malt body in the backround.

Pours a three finger white head that fades to a ring leaving some lace. Clear amber color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Sweet malty nose. Starts smooth and bready, more balanced at finish, the higher ABV is well hidden. One of the better French beers Ive had. $3.40 for a 330ml bottle from Liquid Solutions Tigard, Or.

Clearish golden body wearing a light white ring. Very spicy and remarkably integrated nose appeals to the senses with coriander, sage and various herb extracts that blend into the timid, but present maltiness and soft backing leafy hops. In mouth, algae-like earthy herbs meet sand-like dryness that is backed by a light lactic character. Supporting flavours of fruits, namely orange and papaya speak of the underlying maltiness and juiciness. A bit watery in the mouth, light-medium bodied, the light carbonation shows pretty able, but it could be more lively.
