COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barleywine is a style of ale known for its rich, sweet, chewy character. It has a very high original gravity, which means that the concentration of malt sugar in the wort is very dense as the beer is brewed. It is meant to be enjoyed with a friend (preferably on a cold night by a warm fire as the wind blows off the ocean outside...) and is particularly appropriate when served as a dessert libation. Enjoy!

750 mL bottle, snifter. Ruby-amber hue with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma consists of tofffee, caramel and oranges with a rather out of place vinous quality. H. sweet, m. acidic flavor becomes a m. sweet, m. acidic, m. bitter finish. Odd sour band-aid and leather flavor. Medium-full body, oily texture, moderate carbonation, astringent, light alcohol. The bottom line is: some assembly required.

Pours a murky amber color with a very thin head. Strange aroma of cheese, pickles and fruits. Unpleasant flavor of olives and fruits, the finish is horrible. I can’t believe a barley wine can be as bad as this...

Not much head for a Cisco. Dark murky brown. Weird and plentiful aromas of mint, toothpaste, ice cream, bretty earth, pickles, cedar, salad dressing, sun lotion etc… Funky and not particularly appetizing. Cementy palate, very dry, aggressive.. Sharp astringence dominate traces of malt… Marshmallows, hard water and chalky flavours top the portrait, Strangely thin for a 12% beers, strong carbonation though not as strong as your average Cisco. A very atypical barleywine that was not a success to my tastebuds.

Deep orange and opaque with no head- near still. Nose was of POTATO CHIPS! Nice mouthfeel. 12% is well hidden. Sweetness is restrained- much appreciated. Very warming.

Bottle 0431. Pours dense with aromas of caramel and sweets. Taste is somewhat sweet with a great aftertaste. Highly recommended.

I had two different vintages of this brew, 2003 and 2004. The first bottle (2003) was a bit thin in my opinion. The 04 was a bit thicker bodied. Pours a deep red/copper with a medium off-white head. Very sweet, hot smelling caramel malt scent, a bit bourbony and alcoholic. Taste starts very sweet, but still nice and smooth, hints of a woody character to it, some dark fruity notes, and raisin. Taste finishes with a big hop finish, light alcohol notes come through in the taste but it doesn’t take away from the flavor.

2001 vintage, 8.8%abv. Potent, sweet, malty and fruity aroma, replete with single malt scotch character and some lighter notes of red grape, tart apple, alcohol, doughy yeast, spice cake and brown sugar. Medium-dark reddish copper color, lightly hazy with an initially and surprisingly active head, fading to a fine ring. Flavor profile is profoundly malty and fruity, vinous and bittersweet with hints of light brown sugar, bourbon, oaky and tannic wood, vanilla, sherry, tobacco, sugared date and finishes with some very faint pine resin, tree leaf and medicinal alcohol. Lightly acidic, thinly syrupy mouthfeel, body is undoubtedly full. Unbelievably flavorful and fairly complex, as well. I was honestly a little unsure what to make of this at first, but halfway through the bottle its quality and uniqueness are readily apparent and it is enjoyable, indeed. Many thanks to Michael for sending this my way several months ago.
