3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured cloudy orange with thin tan head...Nuffield hit the nail on the head with the potato chip thing...smelled of grease, starch, and salt...taste was sweet but not nearly as sweet as I expected (especially for 12%) nor as sweet as I suspect it should...hoppiness in the finish...definately complex...

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle #1009. Hazy, apple cider, nutty color, with loose carbonation. The aroma struck me of potato chips, when you get the bottom of a bag of chips and there are just little, greasy bits left. The flavor has notes of caramel, vanilla, celery, and other curious notes. It doesnít have the 12% apparent--moderate palate, low carbonation, moderate smoothness, very drinkable. Interesting beer.

1.2 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20
Bottle # 0156. I should have known to stay away from a beer with the name "Baggywrinkle", but no. Iíve had a fw excellent barley wines lately, which is why I picked this one up. Itís a deep cloudy orange color in the glass with a profanely sharp spicy citrus stank. Thinking that it would taste better than it smelled was a terrible mistake. The bitey, sharp citrus flavor wasnít quite as pronounces as the rancid smell, but close. Iím going to see if my brother wants the rest of this, if not, itís going to be an expensive drainpour.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Very cloudy amber color with smallish head. Aromas are all light. Coconut, molasses, pepper and malt. Taste is good but keeps getting better. Tastes like an old ale at first then the coconut and dried citrus flavors come together. 12% masked very nicely. Yeasty taste. Nice medium body.

Vintage 2002,drank 2/28/04. Dark brown with ruby highlights in color and a thick creamy tan head. Aroma is of wine, cherries, mild acidic notes, oak with sublte roasted malts. Flavor is of roasted malts, chocolate, toasted malt sweetness. High carbonation throws the palate off slightly.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a thin white head leaving traces of lace. Cloudy amber color. Hardly any carbonation. Medium bodied. Nose is alcohol with a hint of raisins. I guess the ABV is all over the place - I have limited release # 0846 and the ABV is 12%. Starts malty and sweet - no sourness, smooth finish but with alcohol overtones. Very pricey $14.75 for a 750ml bottle from Colonial Spirits in Acton, Ma but definitely worth trying.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle No. 0823. Reddish, brown body with an off-white head that can only be conjured after serious magickal work. Sweet, fruity aroma with a strong hoppy background. Berry, caramel, pineapple, toffee, pine resin, toasted cinnamon bread and warming alcohol. The flavors are quite nice if a bit rough around the edges. Sweet, malty, and pleasantly hopped at the end. While there was some alcohol, I would have never guessed it was 12%. A splendid Barley Wine that could only get better with time.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(750ml bottle) Pours a deep orange with a thin, white head. Nose is sweaty and malty. Flavour is hoppy and woody with a thin, malt finish. Unfortunately this came right after the Southampton Grand Cru that blew me away and I may have suffered palate fatigue. Thanks to Muzzlehatch for bringing this one!

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Vinegar, alcohol, sour pine in the nose. Not bad exactly bit not necessarily appealing. Slightly cloudy caramel coloured and opaque with thin head that recedes to ring. Cedar dominates a hot (alcoholic), complex malty flavour. Body and mouthfeel are surprisingly thin for a BW. Thereís something here, but I donít think itís for me. Bottle (2001 vintage - at the post-TapNY tasting session). Thanks to Muzzlehatch for bringing this one.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: MAY 17, 2005 A funky acid membrane envelops the pine air-freshener...Woody notes inflict their severity to the astringent fruit ruckus...Alcohol and caramel try to create some order in the barley wine foundation but somewhat fail...This is one nervous schizo of a beer...3.4/5
Second tasting, a year later...The schizo symptoms have fully bloomed, and we now have a purulent pickle vinegar...Cedar and maple syrup are interesting, but green olives and varnish point again to that gut-turning pickle juice...And the alcohol burns underneath...Ugh...1.5/5
