2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2014 Draught at EBF, 3/22/14
Large, frothy white head is well-retained atop a hazy, goldenrod colored body.
Oddly enough, the spices in the flavor don’t come off quite as strong in the nose. Belgian yeast esters produce peach, orange, apricot and such, while a vanilla-like sweetness completes the aroma. Certainly some coriander and rosemary-like herbal notes adding dryness and pepper.
Lovely palate, with a medium body, some moderate sweetness but more than enough tart acidity to balance. Creamy, almost thick texture at times.
Perfumey hops from the nose combine with plentiful herbal notes to add quite a bit of complexity, but at this point, the spices are too dominant. Hopefully some of the critters continue to build up and help balance all of this spiciness. Didn’t realize the spice character dosent fade like hoppiness, but upon opening my 1996 Saison de Pipaix, I was surprised to find just as much ginger, coriander and even orange peel as I remembered from younger bottles. Anyhow, well-brewed beer, maybe a touch sweet, just too much spice. Certainly not the biggest offender I’ve had but I have very little tolerance for overspiced saisons....

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Rare Beer Club, been holding on to it for about a year and a half. Cloudy light orange, so carbonated it overflowed upon opening. Smells like apple and pepper. Effervescent, light but full of flavor, peppery, floral, some lavender, just a tad soapy. A fine and distinctive saison.

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 6/20
Funny how some beers, for me, just miss their mark. This was one. Poured a very clear golden with a persistent white head. Smells of pine and hibiscus. Tastes of salt, pine and a little soap. Not a good beer. If this was the Reserve what in the world did the regular taste like. Blah!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml to Duvel tulip
A - Pours a dark burnt orange color. Even with a gentle pour, a massive 3 fingers of head grows on top. Bubbles stacked up to the top of the glass and takes a solid 10 minutes to sink to half. Fat chunky lacing all over the glass.
S - Funky and earthy wheat, pepper, lots of fruit esters coated in funk, bananas, peaches, lemons, apricots, cantaloupe, some dusty basement, old antique wood finish, medicinal phenolics, lavender, very earthy and peppery.
T/M - Earthy wheat grain, aggressive carbonation attacks the tongue with stinging bite pretty quick. Vinous acidity provides more tartness than I was expecting, white grapes, lemons, apple, peaches, apricots, earthy grassiness. Malt is sweet but the tartness levels it out. Plenty of old basement wood. Moderate foamy carbonation mellows out a bit when left to sit but is still over the top.
The yeast seems to be really coming around on this beer dominating most of the flavors. (In a good way) Lots of tart fruit and a very distinct basement wood furniture character. Carbonation gets better as it sits. Glad I waited to crack this.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle and served in tulip: I dunno what beer Tom had but mine has a huge head and excellent lace from being over carbonated. Moderate to light lemony tartness and bretty horseblanket along with grassy and herbal hop notes. There is a fair biscuity and grainy background, sprite and drinkable despite a soapy undertone. Not exactly sure where the rye is however.

Found this on sale for less than half the original price - score? - we’ll see - hazy gold pour - lively carbonation - fairly thick head - nose of musky brett, tart lemon, light wheat, floral notes, mild sweetness - flavor is decidedly less complex - semi-sour, lemon, dull yeast, mild phenols, chalky mineral notes - moderately acidic finish with moderate brett muskiness - decent - glad I didn’t pay full price.
