3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep dark brown with a ton of foam. It took about ten minutes to settle before I could try it. This brewery seems to have a problem with carbonating and bottle conditioning their beers. Body is full of smooth chocolatey roastedness with a touch of raspberries. Crisp and robust, a good porter, but it would be great if the carbonation were tamed.

Woa lots of carbonation! CaptainCougar and I had to wait a long time for this one to settle. One of the most assertive and as muzzlehatch says "robust" porters I've tried. Coffe, chocolate present. Overall quite aggressive but nevertheless interesting.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle. Gigantic cascades of light tan foam fill the glass, and this is LESS carbonated than the Captain Swainís Stout I had the other night! The headís pretty stable and pretty though; body is thick and jet black. Nose has hints of milk chocolate and raspberries, but mostly its dark-roasted coffee. Flavor is squarely on the "robust" side of the porter fence, a little chocolaty sweetness to be sure but mostly itís coffee, roasted/burnt grains (maybe some rye to go with the barley?), hops and chestnuts. Bit too dry and bitter/sour on the end for me; almost stale and mouth-tightening; but good body and good mix of flavors do counteract the overcarbonation that I guess is a feature in most of this brewerís beers. Very good, but not, for me, top of the line.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 20, 2003 Deep blackish coffe hue. Thick tan head. Nose of roasted grain, coffee/chocolate. Oh so velvety smooth. Light sweetness, burnt toast, medium to full bodied, and a terrific coffee bitter finish. This is one of my favorite porters, no friggin doubt.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown, explosive, rocky and sticky light brown head. Mouthwatering nose of fudge, cocoa, coffee, luscious malt, gram crackers, and others. Medium bodied, dry cocoa and heavily fresh roasted barley flavors. Carbonation is too heavy but flavors make up for it. Somewhat dry and slightly bitter with loads of brashness. Leaves the longest roasty/toasted aftertaste I can remember. If this were a bit smoother, would be world class in my book. Damn tasty and not for candyasses. Thank you Venom.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Overwhelmed by the tan, frothy, creamy head. Beautifully black. The chocolate coffee flavor is subtle and relaxing, but I was hoping for more of an envelopement, which was the aromatic impression I got. Still, an absolute masterpiece. Cheers.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I have been searching long and hard for this one, I thought I was going to have to go to Nantucket. But, funny enough I found it in the local good beer shop. Perfect appearance, dark dark red, with a large tan frothy head. Aroma of burnt chocolate and alcohol. The initial sip is moderate body with a tart fruity flavor. A much thinner texture than I was expecting, but fantastic nontheless. Great beer that was worth the wait.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Excellent beer, but not one I would put on a pedestal. Great appearance, frothy caramel head (the carbonation did not bother me in the least). Flavors here are interesting: bitter chocolate, coffee, and roasted undertones, with stout-like combinations of them. The overall palate and the lingering flavors in the mouth were not intrusive and not harshy bitter.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Refermnented in the bottle, which Iím upset because it went straight from the shelve to my fridge.Aroma was off, slightly roasted notes, flavor was comprised of roasted malt, choclate, coffee tones, bitter bite at the beginning that leaves quickly and finshes dry.

I donít feel worthy of rating the aroma anymore (RateBeer weekend in Toronto has my senses reeling a little from one fabulous beer to another!), but given the exclamations around me, Iíd say the aroma is to die for. Itís the first one to get this reaction, and there have been some amazing aromas around here, so far! Itís deep black with a tiny hint of amber and a huge, foamy brown head thatís not terribly dense. It has a really active, interesting flavor with malts and yeasts and some vegetable-y flavor in it. It also has a sweetness in it, but thatís not the dominant flavor. Complex and interesting.
