A: The beer pours almost black in color with a finger of off-white/khaki head. S: Grassy hops and lots of roasted malt are the first things to hit the nose. A bit of yeast in the background along with some soap and herbal, mildly piney, hops. Not a very good aroma. T: Fairly bitter, more so than expected, with a rather heavy roasted malt character. More of the herbal hops and a bit of a chalkiness. Some mild dark chocolate and ash flavors, too. M: Medium in body with a medium level of carbonation. O: Nothing about this beer really did much for me.

On tap. Pours with a near black body with a tan head that lasts and leaves great lacing. Aromas are roasty and spicy (rye?) with hints of coffee grounds. Further spice impressions from the hops (decently strong). Slight grainy and pils like malt character. Flavors are grainy, spicy, bready, a touch astringent. Decently bitter, grassy and herbal hop notes. Dry and bready but with a bitter balance. Medium bodied with medium to lively carbonation. Would not have guessed the alcohol. Seems like a black pilsener to me (hoppy and grainy). Tasty.

On draft at Bruery Provisions. Nice roast with slight smoke flavors. Easy to drink. Very enjoyable.

Sampled on tap on 6/3/2011 at Bruery Provisions. This Schwarzbier pours a dark black color from the tap. Small sized tan foamy head. The aroma is roasty malts, dark fruit and sweet. A medium bodied Schwarzbier. The malts are fruity, roasty and sweet. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. Nice balance between the roasty malts and sweet malts. The mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Tap. Pours dark brown to near black with a medium, fizzy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (toast, nutty, caramel, roast), light hops (earthy), and light eaters (fruity) with notes of peanut butter and oak. Flavor is moderate malt with some chocolate and oak notes, light hops and a clean finish. Medium body and carbonation with a sweet finish.

I had this on tap at Cismontane brewing in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. It’s a dark brown pour with a nice roasty nose & flavor.
