1997 Champion Beer, Cambridge Beer Festival. Finalist 1998 GBBF Olympia. Bronze Award 1999 Beauty of Hops English Ale Awards. Named after T. Hobson Esq, Cambridge Carrier 1631, who let out horses to customers on a strict rotation basis - hence meaning ’The Only Choice’. A light golden bitter with a pronounced hop aroma, contributing to the refreshing bitter aftertaste.

Bottle from JSG Wine Merchants, Hills Road, Cambridge. Light gold, fairly flat but with the tiniest bit of head. Very little aroma. Some malt, citrus, green apple. Taste is on the bitter side, sharp and refreshing. Slight bitter aftertaste. Weak body. This is probably the template for the average beer: neither good nor bad, just there. The name says it all: drinkable only if it’s Hobsons Choice.

Bottle @ Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cambridge. Straw-blond with a very thin head. Has plenty of tropical fruit hops and is well-stated in both aroma and taste although feels a touch thin in its texture.

500ml Brown bottle, best before the end of May 2012, poured into a UK pint sleeve July 2011. Lovely bright, light amber/orange body, clean and clear. On top a snow white foaming head. Good hoppy smell, both floral and citrusy spicey. No malt aromas, but I found hints of yeast esters within those hop smells. The flavours within the taste were a blend of various hops and unobtrusive malts which came together very, very well. The body appears a little watery, but this isn’t a strong UK beer and it can be allowed to have a thin-ish depth of body. It doesn’t take away any of it’s drinkability one iota. Would love to try this in cask form if I ever come across it, I will.

First tasted this in Gabriels, Paisley in December 1999. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear mahogany in colour with a thin white head. Slight dusty hop in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a rich digestive biscuit note laced with sweet soft caramel. Hop resins are evident in the bitter aftertaste and continue in the well balanced finish. An ok session ale
