Dover Fest. A dark coloured Old Ale with some sourness and a hint of raspberry. Interesting edges and corners with muddled spices. There’s a lot going on here behind the scenes.

Bottled. Hazy orangey amber body topped with a firm white foam. Urabgey hops with a wild sourness in the aroma. Bitter flavour of orange-peela with an overpowering acidity that probaly comes from infection. Kight sweetness from nuts and toffee Thin bodied with a sourish short aftertaste.

Orange-amber clear beer; small yellowish head, slightly irregular. Rather sourish nose, as pickled fruits, and then dry hops and some faraway malts kick in. Surprising fresh flowery hops taste - makes me think of cask Landlord. Flavour of - bananaflower?, dried corianderleaf and faint spruce. Delicate and nice, light sourish touch intertwining with the hopbitter and a suspicion of maltsweet. Light and dry. It’s very light for a Christmas ale, but admittedly, perfect for a bottled best bitter. Can’t help but liking this a lot - thanks, MatW.

Mid brown colour. Soft fruit, with touches of caramel and toffee. Not sure I would have picked it out as an Old Ale. Nice enough, but it didn’t really stand out from the crowd. And in this context, the crowd included some pretty big beers, so it might have fared better had I tasted it in isolation, or in parallel with more modest brews. I’ll try it again if the opportunity arises. Cask (gravity dispense), White Cliffs Beer Festival, February 2005.
