It’s deep amber in colour with ruby hues throughout, and it pours a billowing and frothy beige head. Unfortunately, the beer lacks the necessary proteins for good head retention, and so the head does fade away pretty quickly. This beer is supposed to be competing with Rickards Red, and I think I prefer this one. The aromas are subtle, but there are some bubblegum and caramel nuances with a touch of roasted malt and faint stale hops. It’s got more flavour than Rickard’s too. Sweet candy (gum) with caramalized malts, and some bitterness, albiet very little, from the hops. This finishes fairly pleasant and creamy with some bready/malt flavours leading off to sweet candy once more. It’s not overly complex or earth shattering, but it would be welcome in a bar that only serves swill or BMC stuff. 2.5-2.8/5

473 ml can courtesy jerc. I’m still having a tough time believing this is actually a different beer than Clancy’s Amber, but hopefully an actual sample will tell the tale. Amber colour with a mostly lasting frothy and creamy off-white head. Metallic, grainy, wet hay, slightly sweet, and light fusel aroma. Biscuit, honey, grainy, and brown sugar flavours with more sugary sweetness combined with a yeasty dry bitter finish. If I was to put it all together, I think this tastes like honeycomb cereal. Medium bodied, smooth but oily and lightly prickly mouthfeel. Maybe this is different from the Amber, because I remember the Amber being much better than this. Given the Amber was pretty mediocre, that makes the Red just plain awful.

Amber colour. White head, kind of pillow like. Then it goes away real quick. Aroma of cheap malt and grass. Flavour is sweet malts and adjuncts. Watery body. This is not awesome.

Golden copper in colour, lingering white coloured head, thick lacing, some noticable carbonation. The aroma is of pale malts, some caramel malts, moderate fruit sweetness. The flavour is very light and watery, some pale malts, cereal, quite sweet. Watery and thin mouthfeel, light body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes watery and very quick. Just another tasteless lager brewed for the Ontario market, just what we needed. I hated this when it was called Rickerds Red.

473ml can from the LCBO in Peterborough, Ontario for $2.20.
Purchased on May 23, 2007 and opened on May 24, 2007.

Can. Reddish/brown appearance and complementary sweet red berryfruit aroma. A thin palate and near-flavourless quality, barring the slight swell of malt in the middle, makes for a very boring and disappointing pint.

Can shared with blankboy, mds, jerc & mabel - my can from the LCBO. Golden-red with a medium white head. Aroma of canned veggies, old dishwater, and artificial sweetener - blah! Flavour of... uh, not much. Watery body. Poo.

Can shared with GregClow, mds, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of GregClow. Pours a clear orange with an average size white head. Sweet sugary aroma along with grain and canned vegetables. Overly sweet flavour of caramel malt and grain -- No sir, I do not care for the taste. Light bodied. Not good at all.

Can from the LCBO. I would have sworn this was the same beer as Clancy’s Amber until I had this. Suffice it to say the Amber I had in the maritimes was at least serviceable. This was rather poor. Amber body, small white head fades. Muted grainy aroma is not lovely. Some pleasant muted notes of caramel are the saving grace. Light vegetal notes. Muted, dilute grainy caramel in the flavour. Thin body. What’s the point of a new brew here?

Better than a lot of beers this time. I liked the red touch and the malty features on it. Very drinkable and enjoyable.
