COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Aged 13 months in Taurasi (red wine) casks, brewed and bottles for l’Ottavonano. The primary fermentation lasts 2 months in a stainless steel tank, then we transfer the ale to the Taurasi cask, where the barley wine continues the secondary fermentation for 13 months, during which time we refill each day the cask for compensating the beer absorbed by the wood. At the end of the 13th month this amounts to about 20% of the original volume. Then we transfer the barley wine into a stainless steel tank for one month to let the beer clarify naturally from possible traces of wood or dead yeast. Before the bottling we blend the aged barley wine with identical, young beer, brewed 1 week earlier.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2012 Mille grazie, Gianluca! Very good, reasonably stable light-yellow head, over totally opaque ink-black beer. Extraordinary vinous aroma, old wine, red fruit, fusels and tannine bomb. Ever so slightly (vinously) sourish, but with a woody, sweeter background. Speculoos and old wine, sweet-sour, black plums. Well-bodied, thinned in the finish by the wine, as the end is totally red wine-like. Alcoholwarming. Excellent, super barley wine. BUT, dear brewer, one criticism: such a superb brew, that will defy time, deserves AT LEAST a 37.5cl bottle with cork, or better a 75cl one - to be revered in a lovingly cared-for cellar. Was: 9/4/8/4/17>4.2/5
Medium, beige head, over darkbrown/red beer. Vinous as few, fusels/ vanilla/ young oak/ red fruit and red winegrapes. Vinous, young fresh oak, vanilla, orangezeste, sweet chocolate and strawberry - wonderful! Rich, voluptous MF, huge alcoholwarming. Explosion of taste & flavours.

Bevuta il 02/10. Un iniziale lieve sentore di "formaggio" che con il riscaldarsi della birra è svanito. Tannica, ovviamente. Con un finale leggermente acido. Molto buona nel complesso. Da riprovare ancora.

RBESG 2010, bottle at Johnny’s Off License, Rome
Nice wine shaped bottle, 25cl, plastic cork.
Dark brown color, nice creamy head. Aroma of wood, leather, light wine. Good body strength, but not as sweet as a true Barley Wine; chocolate flavor, light liquorice, leather, light alcohol. Quite short in the mouth. Anonymous.
