Tap at Barcade. Deep brown crystal clear beer topped by a thin off-white head. Aroma is strange... a sort of dirty malt character, so nuttiness and light solventy notes. Flavour is not good either, sweet and lightly nutty with a peppery solvent note. Fatty and rancid. Sweet and butterscotchy but lacking balance completely.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - SEP 8, 2007
Sampled from growler bottle courtesy of eclectic: Pours a transparent amber ruby with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of lightly sweet, grainy pale malt and some caramel notes with a hint of tartness. Body starts about average with a mild sweetness, less than I expect in a doppelbock, and a touch of fruity esters toward a thinner mildly sweet and tart finish.

On tap. Pours with a clear bronze body with red highlights and a small, off-white head. Aromas are malty, light raisins, grainy, cereal. No real malt complexity. Flavors are sweet with what seems like crystal malt, bready, toasty, dark fruits and raisins. A touch of earthy spice. Medium to lower bubbles, fuller body with some alcohol. Lacks complexity.
2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 DocLock (5969) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 23, 2012
Bomber. Pours turbid deep ruddy muddy Carolina brown/chestnut colored with 2-finger frothy tan head. Nose is sweet melted caramels, some earthy and nutty notes, hops, vinous fruit. Tastes tart, in fact too tart for this style. I’ll try again later, but this one has a lactobacillus infection.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Drake (5231) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - JAN 30, 2010
Growler from Market Street Wineshop, Uptown, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark clear cramberry red with a large frothy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of raisins, toasted malts, nuts, caramel, toffee and herbal hop notes. Taste is toasted malts, toffee, raisins, cherries, bitter hop finish. Smooth, thin-medium bodied.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Dickinsonbeer (5076) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - MAR 5, 2007
Pours a deep copper/amber with a frothy tan head. Aroma is lightly toasted malts, some nuts, caramel, munich malts, somewhat metallic, light herbal hop hints, not as powerful as many doppelbocks in the aroma. Flavor is also a little bland- typical light munich, and vienna malts, hints of chocolate and nuts, and dark toasted bread. Body is a bit weak, and overall the body or mouthfeel just isnt there compared to some of the best Doppelbocks. I wasnt feeling this one at all.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 goldtwins (4320) - Nesconset, New York, USA - JAN 3, 2008
Tap @ Barcade. Poured a clear mahogany color with an off-white head. The aroma was fairly fruity with notes of raisins, grapes, and a hint of chocolate. The flavor was clean and fruity with some mild notes of raisins and a touch of cocoa on the dry finish. Light side of a medium body. Smooth mouth feel with a light carbonation.
