Another great representation of style from Climax! Big malty body, perfect flavor and appearance for a doppelbock.

Shared by me at the Monte’s Krown tasting yesterday. funky and buttery smell. Obviously infected. Sour, funky infected taste. This would probably be decent if marketed as a sour/wild doppelbock. If I knew it was going to be this bad, I wouldn’t have brought it to the tasting.

Bomber. Pours turbid deep ruddy muddy Carolina brown/chestnut colored with 2-finger frothy tan head. Nose is sweet melted caramels, some earthy and nutty notes, hops, vinous fruit. Tastes tart, in fact too tart for this style. I’ll try again later, but this one has a lactobacillus infection.

On tap. Pours with a clear bronze body with red highlights and a small, off-white head. Aromas are malty, light raisins, grainy, cereal. No real malt complexity. Flavors are sweet with what seems like crystal malt, bready, toasty, dark fruits and raisins. A touch of earthy spice. Medium to lower bubbles, fuller body with some alcohol. Lacks complexity.

Dark brown with a quarter-inch of tan head. Aroma is worty, and taste is the same, but with a cloying lactic tang into the finish. $11 growler

Growler. Pours reddish-brown with an off-white, quickly fading head. Aroma is of caramel malt, floral hops with hints of cherry. Full, smooth body. Taste is of rich, sweet, caramel malt, chocolate, some dough and herbal hops. Medium lasting, sweet finish becomes dry from alcohol. Good brew, but it lacks complexity and character of German examples of the style.

Looks, smells, and tastes well within the boundaries of the style, but honesty it’s very average........especially compared to what Dave Hoffman is capable of brewing. The slightly chocolaty/smokey aroma and flavor is what keeps this from being sub-par. Good, but could be better.
