Bottle, but not, er, the freshest, so it probably gets a pass regardless. Nose of sweet citrus and mild grass, but there’s this dominant Jolly Ranchers fruitiness that sticks all over everything else. And a little apple cider. Pours is cloudy yellow with a sudsy bright white head. Taste is sweet but it’s not out of control, a little chalk and dusty coating with the aforementioned green apple, lightly grainy finish and really doesn’t dry out at all. Medium-full body, not particularly clean, hoppiness is light but there. This has very little to do with a German Helles.

I expect something in particular when drinking a Helles beer... This isn’t it. Way to much carbonation. Citrus that seems off style, and it seems out of balance.

FROTHINGSLOSH (3989) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 17, 2012
Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 beers this beer poured a yellow-gold color with a large creamy white head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was faint, buttery, tangy and had a hint of vague fruits. The flavor was bitter, tangy and buttery with notes of toffee, faint vague fruits and cooked vegetables. Medium length finish of butter, toffee and fruit. Medium body. Disappointing.

I had high hopes for this due to the rating on here, but I just didn’t care for it. Had a weird sweetness to it and an aftertaste that wasn’t good. It did have a humugous fluffy head, but that was the only saving grace.

This is a quite good Helles beer with a great refreshing taste and a nice aroma of lemon.

Serving: Draft. Light gold pour. Buttery with a touch of grain and stale hops. Light body with a flabby finish. This one didn’t seem to be made very cleanly.

Total Wine, Chantilly 12oz ($2): Pours a slightly hazed yellow with a white head. Aroma is lemon and bread. Taste is quite sour for a helles. The lemon is the primary flavour. There is a bit of bread and the like. I never had a beer of this style with so much fruitiness, and I can’t quite determine whether I think that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Pours a clear straw color with a white head. Aroma is slightly fruity. Slightly sour taste of lemon zest and also typical German malts. Something tells me this was on the shelf for a while... It’s easy to drink but just not much flavor going on here. Hopefully I’ll get to try a batch that’s a bit more fresh next time.

Light bodied pale Helles with a musty aroma. Thirst quencher but not much in the way of flavor. Maybe we can play beer drinking games with Hoffman Helles.

Pours a hazy pale golden yellow with a medium white lasting head and some lacing. Aroma of citrus, lemon, grassy notes and some light biscuit malt. Taste same as aroma with some light sour notes and some bitter notes. Palate is a light body with low carbonation. Finish is sweet biscuit malt, citrus and lemon flavor, grassy and a light sour notes with a touch of bitterness. Overall an ok average brew.
