Dacrza (164), Great Meadows, New Jersey, USA Sep 23, 2007 Continuing on the Heavy Seas sampler I purchased....short thin head on a solid burnt orange body...aroma is palpably hoppy, to the point of spruce and pine...the hops heat the tongue...lively, full, chewy body...surprisingly smooth, bitter with a sprinkle of (to me unidentifiable) herbs..."American IPA" indeed--the strenght of the Heavy Seas seems to be in their balance of alcohol and taste; this one works well... one could almost argue this as a winter warmer with its complexity and stoker-like heat...
wcampbell (441), Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 8, 2008 Very good. Hoppy grapefruit flavor, but not especially bitter. Piney aroma. Highly drinkable and very smooth. No taste of alcohol, but I could tell the beer was strong from the thick mouthfeel. Full flavored and complex. ewestern (110), Ohio, USA Oct 2, 2008 Dark golden/light amber color with a thin white head, left decent lacing that stayed. Hoppy aroma with hints of orange and grass in it. Not as bitter I expected. Hoppy citrus flavor with an almost floral finish with a bitterness that hangs around. aaaaaaaaaah (4), Dearborn, Michigan, USA does not count Sep 30, 2008 Frothy off white average head. Little malt aroma, masked by heavy citrus/orange/spruce flavored hop smell. Initial flavor of pineapple and grapefruit juice followed by a mildly bitter yet smooth finish. Slight oily texture on palate. Solid amount of citrus hops masks alcohol content well. Good beer. 1010 (67), Marysville, Ohio, USA Sep 25, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a golden color with a thick head. Has a citrus hoppy taste. DrDavid (361), Johnson, Vermont, USA Sep 24, 2008 (Bottle). Big citrusy aroma, mostly grapefruit. Orange-amber color, white head. Flavor a delcious balance of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and some semi-sweet malt backbone. The finish is a little disappointing....slightly bitter, but not very intense.
