| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 11, 2009 Bottle sample at the Blacklick Wine and Spirits tasting on 1/8/09. Clearish amber color with a medium off-white head. Malty, somewhat spicy aroma with some hop. Hop is more pronounced in the flavor with a nice malt balance and bitter finish. Ambitious brew that is pretty impressive. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 9, 2009 Bottle. Earthy hops aroma, some caramel. Deep reddish amber body, small tan head. Aggressively bitter flavor, but with some sweet malt cushioning that balances things quite nicely. A little alcohol intrudes on the finish. Ubermunch (23), Maryland, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 6, 2009 Love this and look forward to it every season. Complex and different it pours nicely and has a full taste that doesn’t disappoint. Not a powerful aroma... but not absent either. Great with smoky cheeses or Italian food. It’s not a crippling ice storm until you drink this by the soothing sounds of your generator. At 7.3abv this can also be used to take the edge off holiday relative visits. lithy (1650), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jan 6, 2009 Bottle thanks to Butters. Ruby reddish brown with a thin white cover, big toffee aroma, sweet with a light grassy hoppiness. Taste is more sweet caramel and toffee a bit too thin with an alcohol bite and good grassy hop finish. gwpom (250), Akron, New York, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2009 12 oz. Cloudy amber, almost no head to speak of, definite hop aroma... first taste, meh, nothing special really here. Tastes like an IPA actually, not quite as bitter. pjweaver (133), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jan 4, 2009 Yellow-beige head w/ light lacing. Hoppy aroma with tea and grass. Pours a dark honey color. Flat hoppy flavor with clinging palate, not very smooth. Tea aftertaste. Not the best I’ve had from Clipper. GAManiac (1148), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 2, 2009 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
Pours a deep, clear amber with a slight red hue to it. The head is a small creamy tan cap that recedes slowly to a thick ring leaving some spotty lacing.
Aroma is sweet with malts and has some grassy hops as well. Some light fruity sweetness is also in the nose with some apples and pears.
The taste starts with a quick citrus hop kick up front before giving way to the bready malt backbone. There is still some sweetness with both caramel and some light fruits. The bitterness from the hops comes back in the finish.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and well-carbonated. There is actually hints of the alcohol on the palate, which surprised me a little.
This is an amped up ESB that still stays fairly drinkable. It’s not extremely complex but is enjoyable nonetheless.
