2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 7/20
Poured into a mug. Bottled March 2011. Big thanks to Hojaminbag for this.
4.5 A: Clear (I think) dark brown color. Initially three fingers of creamy beige head. The first two fingers falls at an average pace, while the last finger sticks around for a long time. Good amount of irregular lacing as well.
4.0 S: Quite interesting. This is the second brew I’ve ever had that reminded me of unfermented wort (the other was Brooklyn Local 1), though obviously not as sweet. Specifically, it smells like a well hopped wort. Beyond that initial impression, I’m picking up a solid amount of nuts and toffee with caramel underneath. Pithy toastiness, if that makes sense. Raw, resiny hops. I think the wort smell works pretty well with the style.
2.5 T: Unfortunately, the wort element is also in the taste and it doesn’t work too well. My other gripe is that it’s a bit too bitter for my tastes. The positive is that the nuttiness returns in a big way with toffee and caramel playing second fiddle. A good amount of toastiness with earthy hop flavor.
3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Reasonably creamy. Bitter aftertaste.
3.0 D: Definitely a big of a strange brew. Not necessarily bad, but I’d really have to be in the mood for that worty taste for me to want to drink that. I usually get my fill of that, however, from sampling homebrew at various stages in the process.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. Bottle bought near Boston. Calling the tan head does not do it justice. Massive and gushing are better. A nice nose of dark fruit and rich malt. Flavor is cocoa to begin and then dark fruit blends with it. At the finish some soft floral hop notes emerge and the finish is more sour and citrusy. A nice brown.

I really like this beer. I’m not a huge brown ale guy but, I do enjoy them. This one is special because it’s essentially and IBA - India Brown Ale. All the best qualities of a brown ale, and the hoppiness of a great IPA. Bottle. Aroma has lots of chocolate and coffee notes. Taste is the same but, with a big old taste of citrus hops. Just a wonderful mix of the two. Nice hoppy finish with a taste of chocolate on your tongue making you wanting more. I’ve had the style before but, this is a standout. I’d get it again in a minute!

Herber und hopfig-malziger Antrunk. Im Mittelteil führt die Malzigkeit, die frisch würzig und hintergründig schokoladig ist. Herb-schokoladiger Abgang mit deutlichem Hopfenanteil, gut! 11/11/10/11/9/11

22oz bottle thanks to cavie.
The beer pours dark brown with a soapy beige head. Earthy hop, chocolate, and slightly nutty aromas. Flavor is very malty with a slight bitterness in the finish.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks to Blankboy for picking this up for me in Buffalo. Appearance: Pretty black, small white head. Aroma: woody and nutty, rye bread, a hint of nutella too. Nice. Flavour: Malty, lots of smoke and nuts, quite wood like again, tons of hops with a good floral feel to it, lots of carbonation with a hoppy malt finish. Quite nice.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(draft @ Tap and Mallet - Rochester, NY) Dark but clear brown pour with a thick tan head. Very bitter and citrusy aroma with some light nutty hints. Surprisingly hoppy for a brown ale. Flavor is nutty, sweet, malty and then incredibly bitter and floral at the middle with a dry and sweet finish of grapefruit.
