2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Really unimpressed. Thin stout with very little going on. I get no ancho, no cinnamon, no vanilla, just strange fake tasting chocolate.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
650ml bottle. Darkest brown, quasi black colour with small, creamy fairly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Dark malty aroma has a roasty touch, a nose-biting, peppery chili touch, hints of chocolate, molasses. Taste is dark malty in moderately sweet, minimally tart and dry characteristic, peppery notes of chili, chocolate, coffee, molasses; full body, extremely long lasting finish with chocolately notes, some chili, sticky palate. Really intense, peppery, chocolately, maybe not everyone’s taste but mine.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Good brew. Espresso aroma. Chocolate notes. Hint of barley wine. Thin head. Smooth wash down. Although there are peppers in the brew they are vague and not overpowering. Simple but ultimately satisfying.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Chocolate spice! Malty goodness! This is a stout with a Mexican twist. Kind of like a stout version of Mexican coffee.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very strong smell of chocolate and cocoa. Pitch black, with dark brown head. Strangely watery to start with. Aroma of chocolate (somewhat artificial), coffee, ash, tar. Very sweet, somewhat bitter. Texture is ashy dry, heavy finish. Carbon is flat but plentiful. Less watery when warmer.

OK. So the idea of using ancho chiles in a beer really sounds good because...well, ancho’s are excellent in cooking. Combine that with the though of chocolate, cinnamon and vanilla...sounds like the makings of a beer with potential.
It was ok, not good, not great. It seemed to really lag in delivering a really great beer, and slightly muddled/lost flavors. The aroma has that dry/powdered chocolate Hershey tin aroma, weak notes of coffee/roast, woody in a tree bark kind of way and some alcohol. The flavor beefs up the interest in the beer with a chocolate/vanilla profile. The ancho chile was REALLY, REALLY buried and I found no cinnamon flavors/aromas anywhere in this beer. Finish was on the astringent side. Far from memorable. Barely average.
