22oz bottle, orangeish-amber color, with a light beige head, with a nice toasted, caramelized, biscuity malty, faint bubblegum yeast nose, with some toffee, brown sugar, light dark dried fruit, sugar pie, french toast accents, and a faint floral citrus, leafy, grassy hop, light candied lemon, grapefruit peel, mild phenolic note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate, with a warmth sweet toasted, caramelized, biscuity, pale, roasted malty, earthy flowery leafy, grassy, citrus resiny hoppy character, with some lemon marmalade, candyish lemon lollipop, candied lemon, grapefruit rind, barley sugar, french toast flavours, leading towards a warming toasted, caramelized, biscuity maltiness, candied citrus peel, lingering leafy, grassy, piney, citrus hop bitterness finish. An american barley wine, in the truth american style.

Bomber purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar 19 months ago ($11.99). Pours an interesting orange-brown hue with one finger of beige foam. AROMA of creamy caramel, some dark candied fruit, sticky pine sap, and mellow citrus. FLAVOR of earthy malts, still-strong hoppy notes of sticky grapefruit and pine, jammy dark fruits, more earthy-like hops, light molasses, and a significant amount of booze. Still quite a bit of bitterness left in here even after the aging, and I would say that the bitterness beats out the sweetness by a narrow margin. The big 11% makes itself quite known here...really could tone down the booze to make it more nuanced. I’ve liked most of what I have had from Clown Shoes, so I expected more here. (191, 951)

Aroma is malty and full of fruit and nuts. There is a lot of fruit esters lingering in here. Exciting. The taste is pretty heavy from sweet dark fruits, figs and overripe plum. There is a big hop presence in here and that brings a pretty good citrus zest and grapefruit to the finish. Medium dry and quite bitter. Alcohol remains well hidden. A solid brew

Bomber poured into snifter. Light head that recedes quickly leaving a clear amber body. Smells of caramel and sour sweet fruit. Hoppy bitterness upfront with the sweeter malty backbone coming in for a decent balance. Definitely feeling the dry hopped nature. Pretty good American barleywine.

Thick butter-coloured head, fast receding over hazy red-amber beer. Rich malts, cakey, under fragrant, sweet-fruity (muscat grapes) hops. Alcohol and fusels apparent, musk. Bitter flavour, hoppy, but with again a strong malt undercurrent, suggesting sweetness and even syrup, without really surfacing. Quinine-like bitterness, fruit as passion fruit and melon, but bitter. Vinous, especially warming up. Rich, but too wry to be velvety. Well-carbonated, well-bodied. Nice BW.

The pour is a dark copper and amber in the body with a thin off white head that dissipates instantly leaving a thin layer clinging to the glass. The aroma is well hopped with notes of pine resin and citrus zest among the trademark toffee and caramel malts of the barleywine. The aroma is laced with notes of alcohol. A bit sweet up front with caramel and nutty notes along with a bit of fruit like apple or pear. The hops are definitely not subtle and present themselves towards the finish with big zesty citrus notes, grapefruit and spicy floral notes. The finish is moderately bitter with more of a hop flavour and juicy grapefruit notes. Heavy alcohol is present but mostly subdued by heavy toffee and toasted malt notes. A nice brew with a big profile despite a light bodied mouthfeel.
