Citrusy aroma with some caramel in the background. Caramel is dominating the flavour with some american hops in the background. The finish is balanced between the bitternress and the sweetness.

Pours slightly hazy amber-brown with one fat finger of light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, moderate patchy lacing. (4/5) Nose is brown sugar, dark boozy fruit, slight citrus. (8/10) Taste is moderate to strong sweet, strong bitter, some alcohol bite. (7/10) Medium to full body, smooth, slightly slick and oily, low carbonation, lingering bitter boozy finish. (4/5) A decent enough winter warmer, but one that could perhaps use a little more time in the cellar to mellow. I don’t seem to have had the greatest luck with barley wines in general, but all things considered, this one is a solid performer. (Though, I am hoping the Old Guardian I have in my cellar might be the breakout for this style.) Certainly the 11% ABV makes me favourably inclined to it, and although it might contribute a little to the sweetness and the somewhat harsh edge, it also gives it a pleasant warming effect on the finish. RexTalionis (2530) - FINLAND - OCT 26, 2014
Bottle. Hazy darker amber in color with a small off-white head. Sweet brown sugar, some butterscotch, also some fruitier notes are present in aroma. Later on the citrus notes are appearing as well together with some maltyness and light spicyness. Bit of fruity oranges, lots of bready maltyness and notes of pine and nuttyness in taste. On the whole a very good tasting barleywine. A really nice mix between the bitters and the sweets in the end, has a warming effect as well, which is appreciated after a day outside in a stormy weather.

Bottle (22oz $12): Pours a dark Carmel color with nice tan head. Aroma has some dark fruits and booziness. Taste the same with some toasted malts and some bitterness in the end. Hard to read the bottle on date but think it was 17 months old when tried so the bitterness has not mellowed much.

66cl bottle @Cimmeria, Oviedo. 14-10-2014.
Bottle: Dec 2015.
In short: boozy robust ale.
Pours murky deep gold-orange, with some creamy off white head. Short head retention, some lacing. Malty, caramel, dark liquorice, ripe fruit aromas. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, oily texture. Taste is smooth, boozy, malty, caramel, liquorice, fruity. Very enjoyable. A robust barley wine, really good one.

DuffMan (6901) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - OCT 14, 2014
Bottle, shared at Thanksgiving dinner with guests. Deep golden amber, lasting creamy head. Sweet toffee, dates, maybe a bit of marmalade-citrus, with a sharp, bitter finish. Nice, but I wonder whether this would benefit with some age to bring down that finish and round this brew out a little.

Tap: brown almost clear color with reddish tints and an of white ring head. Aroma of alcohol and figs. Hoppy Flavors abound with alcohol detected. The sweetness of the alcohol initially is in the flavor and then the bitterness follows. Tasty!!!!

The hops here are a little overshadowed by the huge malt body, flavor, and texture. Lots of toasty grain and baked bread. Some cherry flavors. Gritty texture and bit of an alcohol burn on the back end of the palate. Some citrus orange and grapefruit working late in the palate and on the aroma. Syrupy caramel and molasses dominate though. definite sipper and definitely a beer for the cooler months.

The aroma encompasses carmel and brown sugar with hints of citrus. A clear dark copper pour without a head or lacing. Sweetness rides a backbone of hop bitterness. Carmel, brown sugar, hints of cherries, pine and citrus. Some alcohol noted at the finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, a nice winter warmer. I still perfer Old Guardian.
