2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: APR 10, 2013 Kind of a standard slash average double/strong ale... Muted hop aromas and tastes... Overly bitter unbalanced with sweetness throughout...not many positives on this one...there really are a small percentage of double ipa strong ale type beers worth trying.. This is not one of them yet.. Like the shoes though ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled from bottle @ monthly De Molen tasting. Nice reddish color, medium sized beige head that leaves fair to good lacing. Aroma has malts, lightly hops, lightly sweetness. Taste malts, hops, tea, bitter. Dislike the tea flavors in there. Decent body, medium carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at 2nd tuesday tasting @ De Molen, hosted by dEnk. Clear amber pour, thin white head. Aroma is spicy, well hopped with grass, tea, and grapefruit. Flavor is quite bitter, with a decent spicy malty backbone. A bit off balance but with a decent body.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pretty nice looking, poured the bomber into a tall 20oz imperial pint glass, topped off with the last couple ounces. Rusty copper colored, some haze, many small, fine rising bubbles, a tannish head that had pretty good staying power and left good lacing.
Iíve seen this beer listed or spoken of as different styles, imperial amber, amber ale, American strong ale, but Iím really getting an almost barleywine vibe from this one. Aroma has that heavy, pungent maltiness of a barleywine, but a little more of the smooth caramel malts, toffee, and bread. Flavor is reminiscent of a barleywine too, but a little smoother, with lots of maltiness, a touch of chocolate malt maybe, some toffee and caramel, some crackers and breadiness, topped off with a heaping helping of bitterness.
Body is thick and chewy with a bitter finish, leaving lingering pungent malts and lingering bitterness. Alcohol is not very noticeable.
Itís quite a tasty barleywine for an American amber/imperial red/strong ale/whatever it is. I did rather enjoy it tho, will have to try something else from Clown Shoes.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a cloudy copper color with a large bubbly beige head. Big toasted malt nose with notes of burnt sugar and alcohol. Lots of toasted malt and bitter hops. Hints of burnt caramel, resiny hops and overdone microwave popcorn. There area lot of flavors going on here. A bit disjointed.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark red pour with a baby finger of head. Aromas still fairly hoppy, some toffee in there as well. Piney hops, toffee, fairly sweet, some citrus fruit in there as well. Slight burnt character in there as well. Wouldnít mind a fresher sample but with a bit of age on this its still pretty good

Bottled. Pours slightly hazy amber with a lacing, off-white head. Aroma of burned malt, pine and some citrussy hops. Sweet flavor that ends up dry and with some bitterness. Medium bodied, oily text. and soft carb. An excellent brew.
