3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours an opaque dark brown with a thin, medium tan head that disappears quickly. Little in the way of retention and lacing. Aroma is of molasses, followed by roasted malts and indistinguishable nuttiness. Taste is generally sweet and becomes more so as the beer warms. Flavors of toasted malts, brown sugar, and, yes, pecans are noticeable. This beer hides its alcohol relatively well, but there is quite a kick (probably aided by the sugars in this beer). The only real disappointment here is the mouthfeel, which is very watery and out of character for a porter. Overall, a great beer, but one that I wouldn’t say tastes like pecan pie. If the whole doesn’t quite equal the sum of the parts, it’s at least worth a try, especially if you are a fan of dessert beers.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of pecans, nuts, earth, malt, figs, raisins and a touch of smoke! Medium to Full-bodied; Strong earthy and nutty flavours at first with a very deep pungent toasty flavour and even more pit fruits noticeable, all with some light caramel and smoked peat notes as well. Aftertaste is rich and complex with the full flavours of nuts and earth really meshing well with the sweetness of the caramel and pit fruits. Overall, a nice porter with a huge nuttiness (expected) and a defined sweet flavour from the caramel and pit fruits (not expected) make this great to drink. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 30-March-2014 for US$7.99 sampled at home here in Washington on 15-June-2014.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home. Bitter roasted chocolate, dry, light salty pecan, could do with more nutty flavour but its not bad.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 ounce bottle, 2013 vintage, bottled on 09/17/13. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that sticked around for a while. There’s a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like pecans/nuts, brown sugar, roasted malt, caramel, and some chocolate. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there’s also some coffee, vanilla and dark fruit noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I wouldn’t exactly call this a pecan pie porter because I didn’t think the nuttiness was all that strong, but it’s still a good beer that I’d buy again. $8.99 a bomber.

22 ounce bottle
I have been wanting to try this for a while so when I had a quiet evening it was the first to get opened. An excellent release lives up to the name on the label. If you like Derby pie and coffee then this is the perfect beer for you.
Aroma / Appearance - A fluid rich base supports a growing mocha head that surges before slowly collapsing like melting snow. Pecans, dark chocolate, and coffee lend a creamy texture that is a bit unusual for a porter. The presence has a sweet dessert presence.
Flavor / Palate - Coffee and dark chocolate form a foundation for the maltiness that follows. After a few seconds pecans rise up to sit on top. The warm cocoa of the finish caps off a balanced experience with a handful of marshmallows. Drink this with dessert for a great pairing.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle - Molasses and some sweet boozy soapy notes. Jet black with a rich brown head. Dark chocolate and molasses with a light bit of the pecan in the finish. Nice, but not nearly as good as the 512 in regards to pecan flavor.

Bomber into tulip. Really nice beer from the 2013 release. Not a huge amount of pecan on the taste but a really flavorful beer nonetheless. Will grab again for the 2014 release.
