4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 mkel07 (2340) - Brisbane, AUSTRALIA - JAN 4, 2013
650ml bottle from Archive. Looks like a stout, smells like an IPA. Black as the depths of space with a coffee coloured foam. Nose filling hop aromas are present and very good. Chocolate, vanilla and some aniseed in the flavour, which hits you right in the back of the throat and you get a slight alcohol burn that stays around. Rich creamy velvet mouthfeel. A great label on the bottle accompanies this great beer.

On tap at Queen Vic. Pours a dark brown with a medium beige head leaving good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a Floral hop and roast. Thin mouthfeel with a rich malt and strong hop bite and nice lingering bitter finish. Hides the alcohol very well, a very good black IPA from Clown Shoes.

The aroma is bread, caramel, roast, alcohol, citrus. Definitely malt forward. The appearance is black of course, cream colored head. The flavor has the same malty backbone of caramel and bread, with some pine and citrus mixed in. Medium to medium/thick in body. The finish is pine, resin, long enduring. Excellent all around.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jkwood04 (2283) - Connecticut, USA - OCT 13, 2011
22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a thick, fluffy, light tan head. Aroma strong of citrusy hops, roasted malts with a little smokiness, some caramel, and a little bit of chocolate. Flavor an incredible blend of all of these. Thicker texture. A really good beer.

Pours deep brown/black with a medium tan head...nice lacing. Aroma has chocolate and nuttiness, some caramel and dark fruit...bit of piney hops. Flavor has dark bitter chocolate, some burnt notes, nuttiness, and bitter, piney hops...not as sweet as the aroma suggests. Mouthfeel is medium/full with a lingering burnt finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 sloth (2240) - Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA - MAY 17, 2011
Small tan head with fair retention and lace. Almost black in color, brown edging. nose is roast, faint chocolate and some lightly piney hoppyness. body is med/full, gentle carbonation, slick on the palate. More roast and chocolatey flavors than needed, hops are mildly spicey with the piney flavors being covered by the roasty darker malt flavors. Finish is nice, good bite and a alot of roast. Nice quaff, a bit roasty for me as a BIPA. Bomber procured @ Grape and Gourmet.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 keepersj12 (2240) - Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA - JAN 14, 2012
Pours black with a small tan head. By the description, I was expecting a lot more hops. Instead I got a lot of fruit, prunes mostly and some chocolate. Full bodied, sweet and thick.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tiong (2238) - Espoo, FINLAND - AUG 18, 2012
660ml bottle from Høkeren, Copenhagen
Bottled 12/2011 - Pours pitch black with a small white head. Nice aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, dark ripe fruits, some spices and hints of smoke. Taste is roasty with a lot of dark ripe fruits, some grassy hops, floral notes and chocolate. Finish is smooth and slightly roasty with some hoppy fruity notes. Alcohol is well hidden. Great, tasty and well balanced black IPA.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brigadier (2230) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - FEB 13, 2012
22 ounce bottle
When trying a new brewery why not go big? Instead of starting with the regular Hoppy Feet I picked up a bottle of its big brother. I don’t know if this is a one off or a seasonal; either way should it be brewed again get a fresh bottle and enjoy a fantastic big release.
Aroma / Appearance - Deep oily black fluid pours a bit like stale oil. Rich mocha head is almost the color of an imperial stout. Black coffee, resin, and licorice prove this means business. I will have to try the regular Hoppy Feet to see if it really doubles down everything but the profile is very heavy and intense.
Flavor / Palate - Chocolate, coffee, anise, and maple chew at the palate. Coating the senses the depth is there from the start. Big but balanced this does suffer the lopsided flaws of some beers that just amp up ingredients for the sake of it. If this is an average beer for Clown Shoes I look forward to the two or three others that are in the cellar.
