3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 crazyvin (1692) - New York, USA - MAY 19, 2013
Black body with a beige head that had no retention or lace. Aroma was a nice mix of roasted coffee malts and a nice grapefruit hop note. There was a mild pine note to it. Flavor had some nice roasted coffee malts upfront, could not get a sense of chocolate malts at all. Which is good coffee malts seemed to complement the grapefruit hops, which dominated the hop profile. Moderately dry finish. Good beer which at times the flavor seemed two-dimensional. Somewhat light on the palate. Alcohol seemed to have a nice kick to it.

Pours deep brown with a nice tan head. Aroma of citrus hops and a touch of burnt malt. Taste is pretty much the same. The combination works well, but if just feels like its missing something that takes the flavors to the next level.

Chocolate, candy and hoppy pine on the nose. Blackish color with an tan foam. Strong bitter hops upfront with an interesting coffee bean, creamy chocolate and nutty espresso backbone. Very malty and toffee-like flavor on the finish. Overall, noticable alcohol and bitterness with roast flavors.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 That1Guy (1746) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 7, 2013
12 oz bottle. Opaque black with a light tan head. Fruity hops and chocolate roast in the aroma and flavor. Such a weird combination. Still not sold on black ipas. Light bodied with the citrus coming through better than the roast.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beaver (1060) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAY 3, 2013
12 oz bottle, bottled on 2/21/13. Pours dark brown with a big pillowy tan head that retains fairly well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet roasted chocolate malts and a little fruit with some piney hops.
The flavor is sweet roasted chocolate malts and a little fruit and coffee with a big bitter tarry finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, a pretty good black IPA. A bit too much roast and tarry notes.
