Bottle provided by Huhzubendah. Thanks, Matt. Served in a tulip.
Pours near black with a fairly-good off-white to tan head. Mild lacing and a thin cap. The nose brings forward some slight roast as well as a bit of hoppy character--mostly a bit of pine. Some toasted malt in the background as well. Nothing really seems to gel here. The taste follows along the same lines. There’s some roast and there’s some pine, but I don’t really get anything coming together. The finish has something off with a very strange dryness. A bit too much chocolate for the style. The finish is a bit astringent. I liked their brown much better; something about this one just didn’t really work for me.

Bottle. Black bodied with a tall, dense, dark brown head. Aroma is piney with roasted malt, citrus fruit and floral hops. Taste is big citrus and pine atop roasted malt, light licorice, and floral hops. Citrus oils and pine resins in the body along with medium carbonation and a medium full overall feel. Ends with more big citrus notes, strong floral hops, pine notes, grapefruit juice and roasted malt.

draft at Coles, Buffalo. Darker brown black pour. Great citrusy piney hop aroma with roasted maltiness. bitter almost harsh flavor. Decent flavor but hard to match that aroma.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Boliv (1146) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 16, 2011
Bomber, bottled March 2011. Pours dark red and brown, nearly opaque, with a 2.5-finger foamy brown head that collapses slowly to leave a rocky veil. Aromas of roasted cocoa, chocolate and dark molasses, earthy twigs and bark, pine, and funky fruits. The flavor is cocoa and bitter chocolate, light vanilla, bitter pine, and citrus. A fairly hop-forward example of the style, compared to some others I’ve sampled. Lingering bitter grapefruit accompanied by fruity, almost plummy malt. A little warming, dry, with low to medium carbonation; an easy drinker. Pretty tasty! [667]

Deep, dark brown color with a reddish glow, this beer has a muted hoppy aroma that is almost perfumy... almost piney. An interesting, yet yummy, hop profile. An extremely bitter flavor right as it hits the tongue... almost like a bitter coffee. The slightly offensive bitter flavor turns me off a little - over-roasted. Has a wet, awkwardly bitter finish.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 wedgie9 (1596) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - APR 15, 2011
Tasted on 4/7/11 from a bomber bottle. Pours clear, almost black, amber with a thick beige head that recedes to rocky lace and leaves some residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is standard black IPA with burnt caramel, resin and herbal hops bitterness, along with some toasted notes. The flavor is dark chocolate, burnt brown sugar, along with resin and herbal bitter hops. The body is full with average but stinging carbonation and a long burnt brown sugar and resin hops bitter finish.

Ash and whole orange aroma. Clear mahogany, thin tan head, good lacing. Charred oak and ash flavor with subtle lemon zest hints. Tar notes in the end. Nice mouthfeel. Hops are sparing or drowned out by the patent malt.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Frank (2189) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 7, 2011
Color is a deep brwon black w/ an annoyingly large head even when poured carefully--looks real nice though. The nose here is thick and sticky w/ hops w/ a grassy vegital undertone and a bit of chocolate as well. The palate is nice and creamy but the earthy bitterness is a bit overbearing. It works decently w/ the ashy roast flavor but it’s too strong to be balanced. This is a decent beer but one w/ some notable flaws.

My new fav style is DIPA so i got this bottle of a local version. 22oz bomber. Really dark beer with just some brown edging int he glass but a thick light tan head. The aroma is way piny with a good juicy citrus joining in. Maybe some sweet chocolate aroma just barley as well. The taste starts with a sweet hop citrus bitter but melds into a richer malt with elements of coal dust. Lingering bitter making for some lip smacking
