Poured from a large bottle into a pint glass to drink.k The beer had a thickish black appearance and was mostly opaque with a dark brown hue and a foamy dark off-white head with shorter retention, but good lacing and cling. It had a roasty dark fruit and caramel malt aroma, but also a strong presence of grainy and citrus hops, along with some earthy, floral, and nut scents. The taste had a sweet caramel and dark fruity malt blend that yielded to a somewhat bitter grainy and earthy flavor. Its body was fairly wet with average carbonation, and was a bit creamy, with lower carbonation and fizz.

Color: dark brown beer with a brown expresso head, no carbonization. Smell: malt, spices, hops. Taste: malt and explosion of hops! Really great. Aftertaste: caramel, dry bitterness and hops.

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2013 Black with a white head. Classic BIPA look. The beer is more like a hoppy porter though. This confirmed that as it warmed up, more goodness came out. Big malts, some body. Hops are there in the nose, but just in the bite of the flavours.

Bomber. Pours clear dark brown with a massive tan head that is settling as I type. Mostly chocolate on the nose, with a bit of pine and maybe citrus. Light body, watery mouthfeel, not a lot of sweetness, nutty caramel citrus pine taste with a strong coffee and pine finish that lingers.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; pours almost black, creamy off white head, roast malt aroma which I fear in a BIPA, the hops are there in the taste but they are fighting to be known above the overwhelming roast malts. Fails as a BIPA but would win as a high IBU stout. The bottle date was 02/2012 so some of the hop resins could have dissipated.

Bottled. Pours deep brown with a huge tan head, leaving a fair, irregular lacing. Nose of roasted malt, citrus, wood and resin notes along with subdued flowerish aroma too. Slightly sweet flavor, that ends up dry and solid bitter. Medium to full bodied, oily texture and soft CO2. A nice black IPA. ★★★★

It poured a pitch black and had a body of the exact same color. A small off-white/tan two centimeter head appeared and lasted for a good minute. The body was too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. Spider web lacing was seen spotting the sides of the glass. The smell was basically the coffee and the hops, combined very well. Some malts came in as the beer warmed. The taste had a creamy yet roasty coffee hoppiness to it. I’d say it was pretty good. The palate was about a medium to heavy with some creaminess coming through. Overall, this was a pretty good Black IPA or American Black Ale (whatever you want to call it). I’d get it again.

Bottle. Clear dark brown with at small lacing light brown head. Aroma is hoppy citrus and pine and some light roast, toffee, soap. Taste is medum bitter, medum/full body, creamy texture, medium carbonation. Ends roasted with notes of citrus and bubblegum, reminds me of something from Hoppin’ Frog.
