Big nose. Lots of heavily roasted coffee almost burnt. Strong bitter euro-style hops. Bit of smoke. Fairly simple but good. Long earthy hoppy finish.

Very sweet, burnt sugar and malt aroma. Dark brown color. Bittersweet smokey coffee flavor. Doesnít seem quite 80 BUís. Smooth body with a crisp snap to it. Par for the course for dark, hoppy beers.

Bottle. Poured black with an overwhelming amount of foam. Took me 10 minutes to pour the whole bottle. Light pine in the nose. Nice body and feel. Big dark hop flavor, not sure how to describe it but I like it. I will admit I bought it because of the label but really liked it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. From notes, July 26, 2012.
A: Lots of floral notes dominate. Some roastiness in there as well and a touch of sweet smelling chocolate.
A: Pours dark brown with ruby highlights and a three fingers width head. Retains forever and leaves a splotchy lacing.
T: Dark and malty, hints of espresso and chocolate, with a fairly solid, bitter hop backbone and only a hint of the 7% ABV.
P: Moderate body and carbonation. Mouthfeel is slightly watery once it goes down.
O: Certainly not the best black ale out there, but worth your consideration.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours jet black with a thick tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a hearty chocolate and roasted malt flavor with a very bitter citrus finish. A nice combination of tastes.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Looks nice, a black pour from a 12 oz bottle with a thin brown head. Aromas of pine, citrus and a bit of soap. Good flavors of citrusy hops overlaid on top of sweet roasted malts. Bittersweet chocolate flavors and a thick stouty mouthfeel. Alcohol is more overt in the flavor and aroma than Iíd expect at 7% abv. Well integrated overall, but the charred stout aftertaste doesnít really play nice with the light citrus aftertaste.
