Hoppy Feet has been lovingly crafted by combining premium malt with lots of Amarillo and Columbus hops.
Grapefruit and Pine are balanced on the nose and on the palate by a nutty, dark chocolate, roasted backbone.

Grassy hops aroma as well as coffee and roasted malts. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, with some bitter hops on the back off the tongue.

Lots of foam. Initial hop aroma that I can’t quite place, sticks through the palate as mild astringency. The malt is of bitter chocolate that coats the mouth, has a very nice consistency. Admittedly, I haven’t found a black IPA that I really love, but this would be towards the top so far.

My first beer from this Massachusetts beer company, a BIPA from a 65 cl bottle, allegedly "first made as a joke" (hence the name, I assume). Creamy and fairly dense, tan, lacing head over a very dark burgundy coloured beer, nearly black but still fairly transparent just beneath the head (and only there), hazy. Lovely dank aroma of pine needles, lime peel, tangelo, cocoa and even chocolate sauce here and there, coffee grounds, whisky, raisins, dried banana, a fine but sharpish beef broth odour, fresh nettles, hints of vanilla, rye bread, cigar ashes, hemp, salmiac, plum brandy, candied figs, wormwood... This is a very enticing bouquet, sweet and bitter aromas seem to alternate and the more I smell it, the more lovely impressions I seem to get. Very bitter taste, but in a complex, layered way; restrained ’dark’ fruitiness in the onset, only very briefly sweet (less so than expected based on the aroma), smooth, oily and resinous mouthfeel, slick body, soft carbonation, very lightly (perhaps just a bit too lightly) caramelly and chocolatey malts, but coffee-like roasted bitterness setting in very early and increasing in the end, where it gets the company of a very powerful, peppery, spicy hop bitterness, very dry and resinous, sticking to the mouth cavity, with both elegantly aromatic, citrussy aspects as a bold and ’deep’, earthy bitterness; a salty salmiac accent also runs through the palate, drying the mouth even further, but fortunately being ’tamed’ by the powerful bitterness and therefore not becoming too obnoxious. Alcohol remains well hidden, though a slight warming effect is certainly there. Perhaps not the single most amazing black IPA I had so far, but I like this for its sheer boldness and it certainly scores above average; the coffee and bitter chocolate flavours of the roasted barley mingle beautifully with the complex, spicy hop bitterness, both are still separable, but seem to make each other more attractive. Lovely, but somewhat ’demanding’ example of the style.

12 oz bottle. Pours a deep dark mahogany with moderate retentive head. Aromas of pine, dark caramel, and sweet roasted malts. Flavors follow same with addition resin and dark fruit. I am a sucker for a good black IPA. This one is really good.

12 oz, bottle. Pours a thick, slowly collapsing, light beige head, with heavy lacing , over a clear, blackish brown (SRM 30) body.......nose is cocoa, chocolate, hints of coffee, from the roasted malts, pine resin, grapefruit from the hops, nicely balanced.....taste is cocoa, chocolate, light coffee, from the roasted malts, light nuttiness, pine, resin, grapefruit from the hops, finishing with a pleasant lingering moderate hops bitterness, balance slightly to the hops. Mouth feel, medium body, slight alcohol warmth, carbonation adds creaminess. This is a quite typical rendition of the style. All that it lacks a a bit of caramel/toffee notes in the flavor. This could be easily corrected by a slight addition of caramel/crystal malt. BJCP 8/2/14/4/7
