Pours very dark brown, medium beige foam. Piney aromas accompanied by a watery roast and breadiness. Very, very slight roasted flavors, it’s mostly bitter, dry hops. Slightly under-balanced sweetness is there, but faint.

Pours a completely opaque black with a thick two fingers of dark beige head. The nose has nutty and chocolate notes with a light espresso roast on a robust roasted malt base. Light citrus hops in the middle with a bit of a metallic and floral hop flavour. The finish is robust and heavy with lingering bitterness and a dry astringent aftertaste.

Cask at GBBF 2012. Poured near black, with a thin off white head. Massive aroma of dark chocolate, resinous hops, liquorice, slight smoke and roast malt. Full mouth feel. Lots of bitter, grassy hops, with note of pine, burnt malt and berries. Finish was perfectly balanced bitter, burnt coffee and grain, with lots of lingering hops and just a touch of treacle. Lovely!

Considering my love for Clown Shoes, I was a little disappointed in the very lightweight aroma coming from the neck of the bottle and even more so after the pour. I thought it would definitely have gained some ground out in the open. Very soft aroma, heavy, soft, tan foam with a thick and creamy presence on the sides of the glass. Light citrusy hops present with a nondescript pine as the brew warms, but tipping the glass finally gets me an experience. Roasted cocoa beans and burnt chocolate in the flavor, the taste a light bitter that lasts long and dry on the back of my tongue. The body is light, slippery, and the carbonation just right for the weight. If there were more nose, I would have been delighted entirely. To drink this is a much greater experience than I would have thought it would be, considering the aroma, but I would buy it again.

12iz bottle shared. Pours a dark brown with mocha colors head. Decent lacing on he glass. Aroma is roasted malts and grapefruit weird but good. Even hints of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is a lot more of the same. Nicely balanced roasted malts and hops with that grapefruit mostly pronounced, overall a solid beer with great flavors.

Aroma is dark and bitter and I catch an almost kind of peppery aura. The taste is dark roasted malts with a freshness from the hops breaking through. Grapefruit and chocolate. It is just a tad to sweet for me, but it is a very good one. Solid BIPA with a little too much sweetness, it should have just a little more hop bite to it.

This poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma of roast and citrusy hops. Flavor similar, somewhat bitter and astringent.

355 ml bottle at O’Connors. Near black with tan head. Aroma hoppy, liquorice, pine, fruit and light soap. Taste has soap, liquorice, coffee, chocolate, lots of hops, pine, fruit and resin. Really nice

Bottle. Dark brown, amber highlights, light beige head that retains as a thin uniform pad. Dark malts share equal billing with piney hops, some pithy grapefruit here too. Sweeter than expected, but nicely balanced.

Sample at SBWF 2014. Mild malty smell with some toasted aromas. Similar taste. Lacks hops. More like a porter with a little bit of hops. Probably just aged.
