Lube? Hey, get your mind out of the gutter! Social lubrication, people coming together to unwind, is what we are talking about. This American Black Ale has a dark body, medium bitterness, balanced with West Coast hops and sweet orange peel.

bottle. near black with a creamy, stable, tan head. nose is citrus hops, roasted barley and dark chocolate. body is lighter than hoppy feet and seems slightly more bitter all around but not necessarily because of the hops....just an unsweet beer with notes of bakers chocolate, cocoa and a light astringency. creamy with a very dry finish and medium light body. no sweetness.

Bottle bonus thanks to fredandboboflo! Thick dark black pour, lasting 1/4 inch creamy head and an aroma of muddled hops and dark roasted malt. Flavor is strong medicinal herbs, spruce and dry burnt roasted dark malt. Not bad(unique and definitely different), would buy if I had access to it

Bottle purchased on Dec. 7, 2011, at Total Wine & More (Naples, FL). Pours a medium sized tan head that was mostly lasting, opaque, fair amount of lacing, and a black hue. The aroma is malty, coffee, roasty, and some hops. The flavor was lightly bitter, malty, coffee, mildly hoppy, very, very roasty, and a dry finish. The mouthfeel is tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. Overall, it was too roasty tasting for my liking especially since I am not a coffee drinker.

Bottle. Moderate malt and hop aromas of toasted and pine resin, with charcoal and black pepper in the background. Head is small, creamy, light brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown with a red tint. Flavor starts moderately acidic and bitter, and finishes lightly acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a lively carbonation. Nice yet simple aromas, a little bitey in the flavor, this is a pretty good Black IPA.

Very dark, foamy pour. Unusually boring label from CS. Interesting aroma of fresh pumpernickel, cheese, and floral notes. Dry, roasty, burnt toast flavor with a bitter hoppy finish. It says some natural flavors were added but I’m not sure what - perhaps some vanilla or oak. Pretty good if you like this kind of thing.

Deep brown with big foamy dark brown head. Aroma is grapefruit and pine and a little chocolate. Flavor is resinous; mainly hoppy with a bit of roast.bitter, medium body, sticky finish.

Very dark - good thick tan head. Lots of chocolate malt in the aroma. Taste is tons of dark malt - chocolate and coffee with what must be a ton of hops to almost balance it. There’s so much malt for those hops to overcome, but it can’t quite do it, and that makes it a really nice beer.

Pours a nice brown color with a 1 finger head. The aroma is a little roasty with notes of hops and earthyness to it. It also has a bit of chocolate in there. The taste is just amazing. It has citrus piney hops up front with a nice malt smoothness in the back. Very easy to drink. This beer is a winner.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a foamy beige head. Nose is toasty with some light salty smoke notes. Palate is oily and slick with a harsh bitterness as it hits your throat leaving the tongue parched and numb. Flavors of salty roasty malts, bitter hop notes.

12oz. bottle, dated Aug. 2011. Lightly roasty, hoppy aroma, faintly sweet and toasty with notes of fruity, earthy, spicy, herbal hops, licorice and faint dark chocolate. Black in color with very dark brown highlights and a foamy, lasting, ivory head, leaving thick sheets of lacing behind. Flavor profile is loaded with hops up front, showing plenty of bitterness and citric, piney, earthy hop flavors throughout, finishing with a touch of roasty malt, very swift dark sweetness and some faintly burnt, grainy aspects late. Dry, creamy and effervescent on the palate, body is medium. Nice and flavorful, quite easy to drink as well.
