Big head. Toasted malt and earthy aroma. Nice toasted malt taste with a bright overtone, but overcarbonated. Good, but would be better if the carbonation was less (or at least smaller bubbles). Might just be my bottle.

Bottle. Jet black in colour, with a frothy, beige, head. Marmite, fruit cake notes, orange peel, a touch of grassy hop and dryish finish. A bit too yeasty, but good overall.

Bottle from SJ. Definitely burnt / roasted malts flavors...especially in the finish. Some caramel malt, peach, Earth, hop, coffee and orange. Nice body, a tad bit too much roast int he finish.

This pours black with a thick tan head. Nice malty aromas of sweet chocolate, coffee, and hops is reminiscent of a stout. I can taste a mild malt backbone that starts surprisingly clean and drinkable before a harsh, moderately bitter hop finish that lingers extensively with an aspirin-like bitterness. Malt character when detectible is very mild chocolate and coffee. The malt profile is nicely subdued as it should be in this style, but the hop flavors need to shine and in this case are a bit one-dimensional.

Bottle. Pours black with a huge frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, pine, coffee and some licorice. Flavor of roasted malts, bitter chocolate, light coffee, pine, citrus, subtle licorice and had a dry finish.

"pours quite dark, aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, orange and pine. flavor the same...interesting balance between dark malt and orangle peel, especially with the feel being almost distractingly light. a good beer, slightly overpriced here. would be very good if not for the thin feel."

Batch from 02/2012. It poured a frothy, creamy light head which lasted quite a while. The body is as advertised, black. The aroma was a light malt roast, slightly herbed, with a touch of caramel. The taste was a lovely roast, a smooth, thin, well carbonated body with a medium bitter aftertaste. The aftertaste was really pleasant, often reminding of a crisp coffee.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, Beers of Europe. Poured black as a goth’s eyeliner with a dwarf like tan head. Roasted malt, choc, coffee and a little resinous hop in the beak. More roast took the stage in the rather sweet flavour in tandem with some piney hop and fruits. Tidy bitterness. All considered an above average offering.

Fr0m the Binnys in 0rland Park, IL: I’m missing s0mething here that (yes, peeked at the 0ther ratings) 0thers g0t, mainly the h0ps. Nice l00k, an 0paque, deep br0wn b0dy, with a f0amy light br0wn head. What I smelled was dark r0asted malt, an ashiness, and s0me lic0rice. The taste g0es as the n0se fl0ws, still n0thing 0n the h0ps. It did finish with an ashy bitterness, presumably a h0p bypr0ducct. N0t a bad drink, but I’m missing the Black Ipa part 0f it.
