Lube? Hey, get your mind out of the gutter! Social lubrication, people coming together to unwind, is what we are talking about. This American Black Ale has a dark body, medium bitterness, balanced with West Coast hops and sweet orange peel.

Pours deep black with thick tan head. Only a light roasty aroma. Flavor is off big time. I get that immediate metalic taste. Then a little roast but very little hops. bummer

Dark pour, fizzy head like soda. Smell was citrus grapefruit and cocoa. Not a good combination. Taste was similar, highly carbonated, with a lactic sour finish. I wasn’t digging it at all. It was nice and creamy, but flavor-wise, not good.

12oz bottle from Total Wine, Durham. Dark cola pour with a moderate prickly head. Nose is sharp to the point of excess, a needle buried equally in citrus and ash. Hmmm. Medium bodied, fairly light mouthfeel, but the taste profile is - even for a sometimes dubious style - clashy as fuck. Didn’t care for this at all.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium creamy brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and something faint that seems dirty and off. The taste is bitter hops, some roastiness in the finish and faint nuttiness. Medium bodied. A bit muddled and well off balance.

12 oz bottle purchased at Bark’s Beer Cave. Bottled in August 2011. The aroma is heavy on roasted malts with some sweet character. I also detect some hops present, which seem to be more of an orange-ish floral variety. The hops and malts do not compliment each other in the aroma. Mostly opaque black body with a medium light tan head that is pretty strong and persistent. Starts mostly roasted with a little sweet cocoa powder flavor. These malts tend to persist throughout the beer. This is a little burnt with some astringent, bitter grapefruity hoppiness towards the end. Seems more of a porter than an IPA. Not a fan of this style, nor this particular interpretation of it. Way too charred and roasted.

Schwarz mit voluminöser Schaumbildung. Neben verhaltener Würze kommt ein sehr aromatisches Hopfenaroma hervor. Soweit so gut. Der Antrunk ist für ne Sekunde säuerlich-würzig, dann wird es rasant bitter und zwar Richtung Kohletablette, igitt! Enttäuschend auf ganzer Linie.

Bottle from bhensonb. Pours black with a huge tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a flat smoky molasses flavor with a fairly nasty bitter finish. This is a three year old bottle that may have gone bad.

From Hophead, DK. Bottled, 161112. Black with beige head. Aroma of roasted malt. Flavour with soapy note to dry grain.

In short: A soapy/perfumy and herbal-hoppy dark ale. Unpleasant mess? bad batch? bad bottle?
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed relatively fresh about one months after purchase
The look: Dark brown body topped by a medium tan head with medium retention
In long: Nose is very soapy/perfumy with some spicy notes. Taste was dominated by this annoying soap flavor that overwhelmed the beer. Second to the soap was a strong green herbs character. Then a bit of roast, floral notes, burnt toasts. This beer was like drinking a toasted bar of soap, I hope for Clow Shoes that this was a bad batch or I got a bottle that wasn’t properly sanitized, because that beer I drank was pretty bad. THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY BOTTLE!!! And btw, how did people express their frustrations and angers before the invention of the caps lock key?

Jet black. Little to no head. Metallic aroma. Bitter black-coffee flavors. Dry aftertaste. not very impressive at all.
