Pours black in color. Aroma is of malts, chocolate, coffee, and molasses. Flavor is the same. Nice body. Leaves a roasted malt finish. This is a black ale, not a black ipa.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
The nose has a good balance of hop and malt. The first taste shows a dark malt bitterness along with the hop flavor. The palate is a little thin.
Smooth dry finish. This will work as a session beer for me. Very astringent, because of the dark roasted malts and hops. Love the picture, and not offended by it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: SEP 13, 2011 New 4 pack Black IPA, 8 dollars, yes please.
Pours a solid black with a frothy creamy khaki head that sticks around forever a leaves lots of sticky lace. Smell is piney and citrusy with hints of garlic and a solid roasted grain backbone. Smells like a hoppy porter, but these two style lines are so blurry who the hell knows. Taste is roasted coffee with a mineral edge. Pine and citrus come out to cut through the roast and almost succeed. Mineral earthy roasty finish lingers after every sip. Moderate carbonation and body with a resinous acridic mouthfeel. Decent black IPA but really straddling the porter line with this one. I’m a bit disappointed that the artwork didn’t make it onto the 12oz bottle label, oh well.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black with a big puffy beige head that leaves some nice lacing. Aroma of cascade, slight citrus, roast and grass. Taste is weaker than I expected from the smell; roasted malt with some chocolate and piney bitterness. Medium bodied, little finish. Good beer, but it’s a touch weak here and there. Definitely enjoyable though.
