4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 8/28/2014. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, dark bread, light licorice/dark fruit, smoke, light char, herbal, grass, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, dark bread, light licorice/dark fruit, smoke, light char, herbal, grass, light pine, and roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, dark bread, light licorice/dark fruit, smoke, light char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Russian imperial stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Why must we live in such a crazy dark brown pour .. Medium strength head .. Lots of ink and tar, strong roast .. . Medium to full mouth and a long toasty finish .. . I hope it was ok that I didnít actually drink this in ohio...

Dark dark brown pour, rich brown head. Nice stout, a tad on the roasty side. Finishes a bit dry, some good chocolate and molasses flavors.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Oh those wacky merican liquor laws! Pitch black pour, mocha head. Very hoppy aroma, grapefruit, black coffee, spent coffee groulds, bakers chocolate. Quite bitter up front, citrus hopping, black coffee, dark bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt. Full bodied. Hopping reminds me of a good black ipa.

2.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
22 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at approximately 50 degrees F.
A: Pours an inky black with brown highlights, forming a thick, resilient dark tan head that lasts a while. Lacing clings well to the glass. Light can very, very faintly be seen making it through the very edge of the glass, but thatís it.
S: Roasted dark malt with hints of black coffee swirl out of the glass, alongside some bitter bakerís chocolate, plums, overripe berries, and toffee. A faint echo of pure vanilla extract skulks about deep in the shadows of the other scents, as though plotting something ominous.
T: And here it all falls apart for me. Every flavor described in the aroma is present to some degree, mixing together like something a confused barista might accidentally pour at a Caribou Coffee by grabbing dark chocolate, espresso, fruit syrups, ground toffee, and crumbled burnt toast. Unfortunately, however, all of that is wound through with a veritable flood of earthy, floral, bitter hops, which are forward enough to wreck the whole beer for a malthead. The finish is composed of literally nothing but that hoppiness, which wears out its welcome and keeps on hanging around, like a particularly awkward guest at your party who you donít like and didnít invite, but is friends with some of your actual friends and came along with them so you donít want to say anything and instead just seethe inwardly at the fact that theyíre in your house, drinking your beer...yeah, this tastes like that.
M: This feels more like a porter than an imperial stout, definitely towards the watery side of creamy. There isnít much going on in the way of carbonation either. It feels not unlike a mouthful of stagnant lake water thatís been sitting through a drought, so it has scummed up a little while staying flat and dead.
O: This beer was promising at the pour and at the nose, and swiftly fell right down the charts for me. Granted, I am a raging malthead of the sort who finds SNPA too hoppy to drink, but I also love Old Rasputin, Yeti, Black Hole, Blackout Stout...this is right up there with Storm King as far as severe disappointment in any form of stout goes for me.

As a big, in-your-face imperials go, Iím not a huge fan of this one. Nice of Clown Shoes to empathize with our stupid state law on max beer ABV, but it just doesnít wow me like I was prepared for. Nice roasty and espresso flavors. Damn thing is still pretty sweet despite the dry hopping. Okay, to good experience. 22oz bomber
