2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Lagers reveal flavor problems more readily than ales and this one proves it. Quite frankly, American [imperial] ale hop flavors and bitterness rarely work well in lagers when used heavily....and a clown size foot packed them in here. The beer is harshly bitter and not appealing...no lager refinement here. Pass on this one. I love the several Clown Shoes Ales I have tasted, so I was hesitant to leave this review.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a very cloudy, dark copper color with burnt orange edges and a one finger frothy, off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Pretty good retention with streaks of spotty lacing left behind.
Very bland aroma with lager yeast notes, spicy and earthy hops, and prominent sweet malts. This beer is dry hopped with Citra and simcoe but the hop presence in the nose is almost undetectable. Slightly spicy witj very subtle grass and pine character but lacking complexity in the hop profile. Slightly floral but really boring with some sweet caramel malt, toffee and cracker-y malt.
On the fuller end of medium bodied and a bit more complex than expected. Thankfully, the hop presence is stronger and more interesting than the aroma hinted toward. Some dank, sticky bitterness with resinous oils, pine needle and grass followed by a subtle summit/onion presence before the malt backbone comes in. Sweet caramel flavor along with toffee, hazelnut, some dark fruit, biscuit and graham cracker. Well balanced, flavorful and decently drinkable. Nothing too exciting going on her but it’s a interesting take on the style.

1.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20
Smell is a little malty but mostly hoppy. An orange brown colored beer. Nice head. Big hoppy bite. No way is this a Vienna. Do we know how to say IPL? No wonder its rated so high, its in the wrong style category! Yes, borders on IPA territory fer sure. Some co2 just barely makes it taxable. What else can be said? Just a big rude hoppy lager masquerading as Vienna, HAH big nasty surprise to my lager loving taste buds.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Originally rated on6/6/14. Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with earthy citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel.

12oz bottle from Joe Canals. Poured an unimpressive murky brown with a foamy off white head. Aroma of. Bad malts, bread, light hint of molasses, dry brown sugar. Flavor is like the aroma with some addition of super old and dry citrus rind and tonic water.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pour out of 12 oz bottle, dark reddish pour with slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, bread, dough, some slight yeast into a bit of grass, slight pine into a bit of orange, hints of grain. Taste was a mix of caramel, bread, dough into a bit of yeast, slight grass, some earth, finishing slightly bitter.

Hands down one of the best hoppy lagers i’ve had. Nice big body with great malt flavors and the hop choice was perfect.

5 months old, so maybe on the edge of freshness. Pours a nice clear golden color with thin lasting head and good lacing. Aroma is earthy, spicy, bready malts. Taste is nice semi-sweet caramel and bready malts. with some hop bitterness in the background, bringing a little citrus. This is good, and I’d like to try it fresh sometime as I imagine it would be much better.
