3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Thick and dark. Nice head with moderate lacing. Smells of smoke, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is similar with the addition of heavy roasted malts and bitterness. Maybe not everyone’s style but this fit the bill for me.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Malty aroma; inky black appearance with an almost creamy tan head; sweet, but not cloying, toasted caramel taste that finishes with coffee; silky on the palate with a light fizz; overall, a very good imperial stout

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Bocktown. Nice average imperial stout. Aroma was roasted malt and a slight coffee note. Pour was an ink black with a thin tan film for a head. Taste hid the alcohol very well. I was guessing it was around 8% before I looked it up. Roasted malt, stale coffee and a slight milkiness. Light carbonation. Not bad, not great

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
$10 bomber purchased at Fairway Sav-Mor in Eastpointe, Michigan... from what I can tell, that’s a very fair price, as other places around sell a bottle for $12. Bottled 6/22/13. I decided to get this beer because it appeared to be Clown Shoes’ highest rated beer. Decanted into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass.
Appearance: Almost pitch black with a slight tinge of ruby at the edges of the glass. Beautiful, creamy, tan head on it. Lacing is spotty, but that’s not surprising. Not the best Imperial Stout I’ve seen, but still looking pretty gorgeous.
Smell: It changes a lot depending on its temperature and whether or not there’s a head on top (surprise, surprise!). With the head stuck on top, a pretty sweet chocolate is most dominant on the nose. Maybe a little bit of char as well. Dark fruits open up a bit as the head slowly goes away. To my shock, I don’t pick up any alcohol whatsoever in the aroma. To be fair, I tend to get more of an alcohol presence in an RIS as opposed to an American Imperial. Really just getting that super nice roast and chocolate character you’d expect from a great imperial stout. My only knock is that it’s not making me jump for joy -- seems to be a bit toned down.
Taste/feel: Very first thing I notice is an insane amount of creaminess... holy hell is it pleasant. Absolutely killer. A kiss of carbonation wakes up your taste buds, and you’re hit with the chocolate. The coffee. The touch of dark fruits. There’s not so much a taste of alcohol in this beer as there is an essence... you definitely get the feeling that this is an imperial stout. After you swallow you’re left with a bit of a slick feel, and a warmth. With that, there’s the roast, chocolate, and dark, dried fruit again. As far as bitterness, I gotta be honest, it’s not harsh at all. It just drinks so damn nicely with such an outstanding balance. Really an incredible beer. As this beer warms, you really get the full experience. Being out for about 30 minutes and sipping on it, I’m actually enjoying it more. The smoke/ash sort of flavor is coming out in full force, which is a great thing, as it adds a bit more bitterness to make this feel more appropriate for the style.
Overall, $10 for 22oz equates to... I don’t know. $5.40 or something like that for 12oz. Given that, it’s not exactly worth that price, considering there are some Imperial Stouts that are nearly as good (or better) for quite cheaper. Take for instance, FBS. Because of the price, I give this beer a 4.25 overall, but the look, taste, and feel are all on point. I’m impressed. One of the very best beers I’ve had.
