3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: AUG 25, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Kevin. Extremely dark. Pitch black with a huge, creamy, long lasting tan head; some nice sheety lace. Aroma is plentiful chocolate malt, light roast, some sweet smoked malt, and a bit of dark fruit sweetness. A little bit of sweet anise, too. Taste is quite sweet, almost like plum-y or grape like, with some milk chocolates that beam through and add sweetness. Light smoke, light roasty wood. Quite hoppy in the middle, ashy and almost citric. Some black licorice in a milky sweet, malty finish. Mouth feel is a little thinner than expected. Little boozy with warmth. Decent stout, but better options exist.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: jet black, vanishing tan head, minimal lacing. Aroma: bitter dark chocolate, ash and light smoke, hint of licorice and vanilla, hint of plums and prunes. Taste: dark and roasty and bittersweet, with chocolate, vanilla, licorice, definite hickory smoke, soy sauce, hint of burnt molasses. Finish: long, roasty, and bittersweet, but with well-hidden booze. Notes: Big beer from a bold brewery. Not bad, but not amazing. Seemed just a tad muddled, like too much was going on. Still enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma is espresso, coffee, raisins, toffee and deep roasty rich malts. Taste is like aroma. Deep rich sweet malts with brown sugar and a light bitterness in the background that is very subtle. Some notes of rye here aswell. Appearance is black with a thin beige head that retains fairly poorly.

I poured this dark beer into the glass, a chocolaty head that receded almost immediately. A heady aroma of toast, baking chocolate and dark fruit. Slightly salty, smoky as hell.
Clown Shoes has done it again. Yum.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 10/5/14, Bottled 1/21/14
Aroma: The nose is heavy roasted malt, burnt/ash as well, with licorice, dark chocolate, and smoke
Appearance: Pours a pitch black color with a small, frothy brown head leaving plenty of spotty lace
Flavor: Dry/ashy/smokey malt flavors up-front, roast and chocolate notes lead to a mid-sweet middle palate, and it finishes with a boozy flavor that drowns out the earlier ashy and sweeter malt flavors
Palate: The body is medium, leaning toward full, with an average carbonation, and a dry, hot finish
This one has quite a bit going on. There’s three distinct components of this one that seem to work pretty well in collaboration. There’s a nice flow from the ashy/smoke to the sweet malts and into the boozier finish. It is drinking pretty nicely right now. Definitely worth trying.

Very nice. This bottle was before the name change. This brewery does imperial stouts well. Roasted and sweet malt essence. Almost pure black with light brown edges. Small and quickly dissipating head. Fluid and oily but not too thick. Roasted malt and hops up front with a finish of coffee and vanilla. Chocolate too.
