3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Subtle but lacks some of the complexity of the kings of this style. Aroma is a unique woody and a touch of roasted coffee. Flavor is a little port wine, red fruit, and vanilla. The finish has a touch of smoke and chocolate. Finishes with a bittersweet chocolate aspect. Smooth texture and full bodied. You are left with a sweetness that lasts for a while. Very drinkable.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
After one of these beers, I will probably turn into an undead chap myself and cease to appreciate what a wondrous potion it is. Gargantuan aroma and flavours are found in this last-nail-in-the-coffin Stout; smokey business, freshly dug earth, bitter chocolate, espresso, burnt fruitcake, cherries, vanilla. Such potency could make one rise from his grave and shortly after, head right back. The sort of fireside beauty you share with a beauty, fireside. Syrupy enough, this necro-elixir is a fine example of why Clown Shoes is awesome and some other things are not.

Bomber @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Jan 16, courtesy of Simon F. Many thanks. Pours very dark with tan head. Fantastic chocolate fudge cake aroma with a decadently rich and smooth stout character. Good bitter hop presence too.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bomber into a tulip. Pours black, with a minimal brown head that quickly disappears. Nose is cocoa and dark roast malt. Taste follows the nose. Soft carbonation with a creamy mouth feel and a long smooth finish. Excellent Imperial Stout, and hides the 10% ABV very well. Delicious.

3.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
The aroma is malt, hay, kind of a cleaning aroma. Pours black with light brown head mostly diminishing, good lacing. The taste is bitter with a slight sweet/sour. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Clown Shoes’ take on the nowadays overexposed imperial stout style, but explicitly profiled as an ’American imperial stout’ rather than a ’Russian imperial stout’ - intriguing. Thick, dense, creamy, very regular, lacing, pale beige head over a jet black beer which, in pouring and after the head has diminished, shows a beautifully warm deep rusty brown hue. Strong and inviting aroma of espresso and cold black coffee, wet leather, beef stock, black olive, dried seaweed, biltong, black chocolate bars, bourbon, pepper, bayleaf, fresh paint-like phenols, candied fig, mocha ice cream, faint vanilla, black tea and walnut. Restrained candied, raisin-like sweetness in onset paired with a ’deaf’, deep dark fruit sourishness and meaty umami accents, very full from the start with soft carbo fit for the style, thick and oily, creamy mouthfeel, plunging me effortlessly into an abyss of caramelly and chocolatey bittersweet malts with a strong, coffeeish roasted edge filling the mouth cavity and sticking to it for a long time; finish adds further bitterness with deep, leafy, spicy hops and a friendly glow of warming, bourbon-like alcohol. The bittersweet, roasted ’black chocolate’-like maltiness lingers in the throat along with the hop bitterness. In spite of the rebellious attitude and name of this beer, it is in fact quite ’friendly’ (for an imperial stout, that is) and pretty typical for the style; it has no obvious flaws and shows a high drinkability, with a surprisingly supple and smooth (yet obviously still very ’beefy’) body for a 10% stout. Lovely and whether American or Russian, I’d recommend this one as a relatively ’easy’, but very accomplished introduction to this particular (sub)style.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft pour, rich boozy aroma. Sweet malts backed with plenty of hop bitterness is nicely balanced. Thin palate doesn't linger. Gravity well masked.

Dark brown nearly black pour with brown head (pour from a growler). Roasty boozy chocolate aroma. Dark fruit molasses some coffee. Long lingering dark fruit and chocolate finish. Excellent imperial stout.
