3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This, apparently, is Clown Shoes’s second anniversary ale. My first thought: "They’ve only been open for two years and they already have distribution reaching Texas... from Massachusetts? How did they pull that off?
Black in color, dark and silky appearance with a medium-brown head, Vampire Slayer looks the part... looks great! Aroma is of your standard roasted malt and chocolate malt, with a little bitterness arising from the roasted malts and a hint of coffee.
The flavor, again, is exactly what you’d expect of an imperial stout. I’m starting to think there’s really nothing special about this beer. Then again, judges love beers true to style, just like dog show judges, so maybe uniqueness doesn’t always pay the bills.
There’s a slight, thin creaminess to the body, delivering a warm roasted malt character as soon as it enters the mouth. That roasted malt then carries its warmth through to the finish. A fullness in the mouth and a sharpness at the back of the tongue makes for a fun drink that’s also full-flavored. The roasted malts and alcohol dries up the center-back of the tongue very well.
It’s not overly sweet (more roasty than sweet, for sure). In all honesty, it’s not sweet at all. All possible sweetness seems to have been burned off by a very effective yeast strain that leaves practically no trace of itself behind. This a a very good, well-balanced, standard example of an imperial stout.
As roasty as I might have made this sound, it’s actually very pleasant and a joy to drink. Nothing spectacular overall, though. I’d put it in the middle of the road among other beers of the style.

22oz bomber: This one pours an inky, opaque dark brown color. There was a very small brown head on it that didn’t linger long or leave any lacing. The nose is good. Touch of smoke, just a hint of alcohol. Chocolate, dark fruits, hint of spruce: there is a lot going on in there. The taste is good. A bit of a sweetness to it. Some espresso, chocolate, spruce, dark fruits and some bitterness/dryness in the finish. This is really good!

nice showing from Clown Shoes (aka Mercury Brewing Co.). The style of imperial stout is super competitive, and I’m not sure these clowns are doing anything I haven’t encountered before, but it is a solid offering with ample malt, smoke, espresso, and spruce-like hops. High alcohol well-hidden.

22oz bottle, shared with DanielCoor and co. Pitch black color. Good thin light brown head. Nice ropes of lace. Kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Bigger, chewier body. Moderate sweet. Bigger bitter taste. Lightly spicy. Light bite in the finish. Roasty malt. Some coffee, dark chocolate, light smoke. Great imperial stout. Especially good with pizza.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a thick lacy brown head. Aroma is lots of of chocolate, coffee, some licorice, burnt malts, stone toffee and more chocolate. Taste is moderate sweet and quite bitter. Long boozy finish, some marzipan and bitterness. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Incredibly soft creamy profile. Very good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

Thick and dark. Nice head with moderate lacing. Smells of smoke, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is similar with the addition of heavy roasted malts and bitterness. Maybe not everyone’s style but this fit the bill for me.

Malty aroma; inky black appearance with an almost creamy tan head; sweet, but not cloying, toasted caramel taste that finishes with coffee; silky on the palate with a light fizz; overall, a very good imperial stout

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Bocktown. Nice average imperial stout. Aroma was roasted malt and a slight coffee note. Pour was an ink black with a thin tan film for a head. Taste hid the alcohol very well. I was guessing it was around 8% before I looked it up. Roasted malt, stale coffee and a slight milkiness. Light carbonation. Not bad, not great
