COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular.
A stronger than expected mild. Very dark, with a full flavour and a slightly bitter aftertaste, this places mild in the forefront of cask-conditioned beers again. It has a fullness, which as its name suggests lets you know it's there. A very frequent medal winner at the Great British Beer Festival.

Hand pulled pint into a UK sleeve during a beer festival at ‘The Crown Inn, Oakengates (Sep 2011), one of 34 cask ales on hand pulls. Deep, deep ruby red, with a good tan coloured crown of tightly bubbled foam. Roasted malts, rolled in a peat bog, with a melted chocolate bar sort of smell. This beer used to make my bottom ‘report’ in the old days when I had buckets of it, this time I only had the one. Rich and creamy for a dark mild, but only in taste, the body feel was fairly thin or ‘watery’, it is after all only 3.8%ABV. I like it, it may have very little in the way of hops or body strength, but it is very easy to drink and a fine example of the style.

Cask at Pigs Ear. Clear dark red - brown beer. No real head. Light dry palate. Sweet dark malt. A little red fruit underneath. Dry finish. Flat but okay.

Nocturne (142) - Northwich, Cheshire, ENGLAND - MAR 19, 2012
500ml bottle, which the brewery’s website makes no mention of. Pours out black with a big head. Roasted malt aroma. Quite an oily texture, but manages to avoid being watery. A fair bit of carbonation but this does give it some kick as per the "gunpowder" name. A little bit of sweetness and some blackcurrent undertones. Not terribly exciting, but a creditable mild.

Botle. Dont know how a 3.8 can be classed as strong. Small head and mallty. Slightly above average but nothing to write home about.

Extremely well balanced mild ale, full-bodied and feels nice in the palate.

First tasted this in the Bon Accord, Glasgow in December 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Black ruby in colour with a thin creamy buff head. Strong roasted malts in the long aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing throughout. Dark malts give a burnt toast flavour which fades as coffee, bitter chcolate, treacle and liquorice notes come in. Hop prickle really evident in the brief dusty aftertaste. Finish is dry and roasted. An easy session mild.

Cad @ The 3 Judges. Almost black colour, reasonable head. Sour liquorice malt aroma. Sour grassy blackcurrant caramel flavour. Smooth with sour aftertaste. Not good.

Cask, Carlisle BF. Not had this for years and forgotten how much I enjoyed it. Chocolatey and smooth soft malt aroma and palate, loads of flavour with a rounded, satisfying sweet malt finish. Great English mild.

Cask at GBBF 2010. A dark brown beer with a red shine under a beige head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt. Boring.
