2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Spiesy (2336) - Sydney, - MAR 9, 2004
Cask Conditioned, Masque Haut, London. Sure didn’t look like a pale ale this one. Golden amber colour. Sweet, honey due aroma. Flavour was dull and didn’t impress overly.

Cask at County Hotel (JDW) Ashford
Normally I like Coach House beers very much, but this was a bit too sweet for me and although advertised as a pale ale, it wasn’t that pale. Sweet malt in mouth with a sweetish finish with some hay and hop notes.

Cask: Bitterness in the palate. Somewhat fruity - apricot. Not very interesting.
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Hildigöltur (5107) - København, DENMARK - NOV 5, 2003
[Cask conditioned] Dark golden coloured. Far too sweet with interesting smoked notes. Rather boring and thin. Not refreshing at all.

Not surprisingly, in view of the soaring temperatures, there was quite a preponderance of refreshing "summer" ales at this year's Great British Beer Festival (and very welcome too) and, judging by the name, I expected more of the same with this beer. In fact, it is not a typical summer ale at all. For a start, whilst lightish brown in colour, it was nowhere near as pale as most summer ales. It also had much more malt on the palate than most examples of this style and, whilt it was quite hoppy it did not have that overpowering US hop fruity aroma. Quite nice, and quite refreshing, but a bit sweet on the finish. Cask, August 2003
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BeerLimey (2135) - California, USA - AUG 8, 2003
Golden brown appearance, smooth velvetty text book foam. Toffee caramel aroma and flavor. Sticks a little to the palate, buttery, with a light frsh bite in the finish that just about cuts the sweetness.
