troyc (976), Lubbock, Texas, USA Feb 10, 2008 Updated: Feb 11, 2008(Tap) Re-rate: I tried this beer again a couple of days later, and I did get some smoke flavor and aroma out of it. It’s rather light, but it is there. I think there may be a problem with batch consistency as far as the smokiness goes. The beer was better the second time around...
Original Review:
Pours a brown color with a tan, foamy head. Dusty aroma of chalky malts and cocoa. Taste is of roasted malts, nut, burnt toffee, and sweet caramel. No discernible smoke flavor or aroma. Decent palate and soft carbonation. It tasted like the usual Coach’s amber malts were used, which was too sweet for the beer. However, it seems like more malt was used than with their other beers (which was a plus). I am somewhat torn on a rating for this beer, because it was pretty good and it had a better palate than pretty much any other Coach’s beer I have had. At the same time, there is no way that it could be considered a ’Smoked’... or really even a ’Porter’ for that matter.
