Don’t be easily deceived... This smooth ale shrouded in a smoky haze is quite powerful. German rauch (smoked) and Scottish Peated malts combine for a pronounced and layered smokiness. The remarkable smoothness may leave you slipping into a trance.

Poured from a 650mL bottle. Dark brown (almost black) with no head. Sweet smokey, leather, molasses smell. Sweet smoked jerky taste. Thick creamy texture, but with no carbonation. Would I buy it again? Absolutely, but not often (every now and then kind of beer).

Bottle share. Hazy dark brown. Medium smokey aroma. Tart. Medium-low dry finish.

Darkish brown, big blast of Port Ellen right off the top, and the Weyermann shows up a bit, too. Things that aren’t smoke are decidedly more subdued. Big fat sweet molasses malt, the beech smoke slides in there. Rich, soft, touch of alcohol to let you know its strong. Damn fine beer, at least if you’re a smoke whore.

Bottle thanks to vertbaconstrips and Ferris. Pours very dark brown with tan head. Nose and taste of beef jerky, smoke, peat, bacon, ashy chocolate and brisket. Medium body. A bit one dimensional but good.

650ml bottle pours black in color with a finger and a half of light brown head that leaves some pretty solid lacing on the glass. Aroma is dominated by smoke with hints of peat and chocolate. Taste is also dominated by smoke with some peat and a dark chocolate malt sweetness with some hints of dark fruits as well. Would have rated higher if the smoke was not so overpowering. Overall, not a bad brew.

Very modest dark brown head, very dark velvet-black body. Aroma is heavy smoke, shoe leather, peat, animal hair. Flavour is a heavy barley-peat mix with some citrus notes, orange rind. Dry finish. Not much to look at but it does deliver well in the flavour department - and I’m not a big fan of smoked beers!

gramity (1586) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 12, 2013
Bottle. Jet black with thin brown head - looks like the crema on espresso. Aroma is heavy smoke, roasted malts, and a bit medicinal. Taste is fairly one dimensional with heavy smoke characters and not too much else. A bit of cocoa on the nose and in the taste.

Bottle to flute Smoke, dark chocolate, fish oil aromas. Dark brown with a dark tan ring like head. Taste is smoky and malty with a tiny bit of bitterness.

Bottle - Smoke, iodine, and roasted malts with some dark fruit. Jet black and thin brown head. Smoky and some chocolate, but seems a bit thin and one dimensional. Not that great.

Pours a nice black toasted cappuccino head with a smokey chocolate, roasted character. Little off sour something there, gorgeous pour, man that is good. Served around 8 deg C from a 650ml bottle. Easy carbonation, easy bitterness, neither the driver here. Good body, smoked malt, somewhat peaty yet not cloying at all. Its good! ABV is 8.5%%, doesn’t taste like it. That’s a good beer.
