Our take on a kölsch style ale that is soft on the palate with delicate malt flavor. Balanced with a touch of wheat and honey notes. Dry and winelike with a flowery hop finish.

Bottle brought back by my sister-in-law. Slightly hazy lemon, white head. Nose is grainy malt, lemon, grassy hops. Flavor is light pills malt, grass, solid bitterness, a bit of astringent in the finish.

Draft at the brewery. Pours a very cloudy to murky yellow with a small white head. Must be a new or about to blow keg. Aroma is slightly mineral like with some light fruity esters. Taste is initially slightly bitter with some some malt sweetness that seems very heavy on the tongue. Finish is slightly off. Kind of yeasty I guess. Thinking I just got the bad part of the keg.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy golden with a lacy, white head. Aroma of light malts, some hints of wheat and honey as stated, and light hops. Flavor the same. Average to lighter texture. For how light everything is in this beer, it’s not bad at all.

Bottle From COAST. Clear dark straw color pour with a foamy white head. Grassy, flower like aroma with notes of pale malts and bread. Smooth, pale malt and honey flavor upon entry that leads to a grassy, pine finish. Clean, easy drinking and nice on a hot day.

Light, crisp, with strong yeast esters and some bready notes. Would be great out in the sun on a hot day, but a bit too light for my liking otherwise.

22oz bottle. Poured a yellow color with an averaged sized head. Bready, wheat, grassy, and some citrus. Not my favorite style, but drinkable for me.

Bottle sampled at Classic City Brew Fest 2014. Better than your standard kolsch, nice floral notes from the hops with a hint of spice, sweet cereal grain, and clean yeast crispness. Very easy and drinkable, bubbly mouth.

On tap at Closed for Business. Pours a clear neon yellow with a thin white head. Aroma of bready malts, light fruits, lemon. Flavor of light spices up front, sharp pale malts, light fruits. Fairly bold and sharp for a kolsch (not a bad thing). I quite liked it, a step above your average kolsch. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

I thought this would be a category leader. A delicious Kolsch. There was some wheaty, citrus flavors along with a beautiful hazy golden-straw beer.

I believe this is my first introduction to the Kolsch style, from an unexpected source - a South Carolina small scale micro-brewery rather than one of the original Cologne breweries - but according to my colleagues is indeed an authentic example of the style. The local source is a bonus I’m still trying to comprehend the appearance of this style but I suppose this is close to the standard of hazy pale gold color and bubbly lacing. Flavorful with a number of subtleties with pale malt base, lemon notes, and some honey sweetness. Very light mouthfeel but again I understand this to be par for the style. Clean refreshing finish. Different and enjoyable overall, I am definitely intrigued by the Kolsch style and intend to sample more. I also will keep an eye out for more offerings from Coast Brewing.

Draft. Pours a cloudy straw color. Light body, exceptionally drinkable, with a nice palate cleansing finish. Floral notes with a bit of brininess.
