Batch 1 (June 2010): 7-months in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels
2012 Release - Aged 11 months in Blanton’s Barrels.

As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt.

In short: A bourbon barrels orgy that remains quite drinkable. Good.
How: Bottle shared at RBSG 2011 grand tasting
The look: Black Body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose has plenty of bourbon barrels, this really is in-your-face bourbon barrels. Taste is bourbon barrel juice, tar, dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut, etc. The usual suspects that you can expect from an excessively bourbonized imperial stout. But somehow I thought this one was rather drinkable and didn’t feel boozy or overly sweet. A decent beer overall. Another big beer enjoyed during the RBSG grand tasting, and I’m certain that a stranger who walked in the hotel reception room and saw all us beer geeks sharing beers and taking notes in little notepads would assume we call it the "Ratebeer Summer Gathering" because "The Biggest Loser" was already taken.

Growler… This beer rocks!… Pours pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Decent retention. The aroma offers dark mocha, vanilla, bourbon, coconut and a trace of toasted oak. Full-bodied and silky with solid carbonation. The flavor is of black malt, warming bourbon, sweet dark chocolate, singed caramel and a whisper of pouch tobacco. Lengthy, burnt, mildly boozy finish – hop, black malt and ethanol bitterness hangs out a good while after each sip. World class treatment of a really good, but not great beer. Growler courtesy of Elliesbrown. Thanks Zack!

This poured a pitch black color with a tan head. Aroma was lots and lots of bourbon, some dark chocolate and roasted coffee too. Flavor was semi sweet chocolate, fairly roasted and then a good amount of boubon and alcohol showing through. Nice

A: The pour is essentially black in color with a thin layer of dark khaki head. S: Whiskey and vanilla come through but the intense roastiness of the base beer is also really quite apparent. There is a bit of dark chocolate and coffee on the aroma as well. A touch of molasses and char. T: Pretty much the same story on the palate. Whiskey flavor and vanilla with charred oak. Lots of roasted malts with some molasses and toffee sweetness as well as dark chocolate notes. M: The body is certainly a bit thin on this beer, but the carbonation and mouthfeel are solid. O: The barrel aging helps to take away some of the intense roast character, but it’s not an amazing beer.

Bomber received in a trade with funkdelic. Thanks again Cameron! Pours a dark black color that is opaque with dark mahogany edges and a one finger light beige head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Spots of lace left behind. Sweet bourbon aroma that’s not too boozy with a good amount of earthy oak. Toasty with lots of chocolate malt, oatmeal and burnt toast. A bit burnt/acrid smelling. Medium bodied and slightly chewy with a light bourbon presence while still containing a good amount of heat. Decent barrel character with the bourbon well integrated into the flavor with toasted oak and faint vanilla. Lots of roasted malt with hints of bittersweet dark chocolate, oatmeal and burnt toast. Slightly acrid and dry.

dark brown, wispy tan head, toasty oatmeal nose, light chocolate, light wood. Flavor is soft, milky, bit of chocolate and grain through finish, soft chocolate with light bourbon heat and sweetness. Thought the palate went well with profile, but otherwise forgettable.

Bottle at RBSG Grand Tasting. Pours near black with a beige head. Roasted malty aroma, with dark fruits and a hint of sweet bourbon. The flavor has roasted malts, bourbon, and dark fruits. Awesome.

651mL at RBSG in Philly 2011. The infamous BeerAdvocate White Wale it Forward p2 (WWII) catastrophe beer. The pour is a clear deep ruby looking like cola. A small tan head leaves spotty lace. Nose is red fruity and apple heavy thankfully moving to meat and fat with spicy bourbon. Taste is buttery bourbon and soft with lots of hot and warming alcohol, tannic oak. Ends ashy and bitter with spicy bourbon and black peppercorn. Pretty nice overall.
